English Translation
Ya'qub told us, my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, from 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatada, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: When we came upon the valley of Hunayn, we descended into a valley among the valleys of Tihama, deep and steeply sloping, and we could only descend into it by going straight down. It was in the darkness before dawn, and the enemy had lain in ambush for us in its ravines, its sides, and its narrow passes, having gathered, prepared, and made ready. By Allah, nothing alarmed us as we were descending except the enemy battalions charging upon us as one man, and the people fled, retreating, continuing on without anyone turning back for another. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, veered to the right, then said, "To me, O people! Come to me! I am the Messenger of Allah! I am Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah!" But nothing could be done, as the camels were carrying each other along. The people went on, except that with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, remained a small group of the Muhajirun, the Ansar, and his household, not many. Among those who remained steadfast with him, peace and blessings be upon him, were Abu Bakr and 'Umar, and from his household, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib and his son al-Fadl ibn 'Abbas, Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith, Rabi'a ibn al-Harith, Ayman ibn 'Ubayd — who was the son of Umm Ayman — and Usama ibn Zayd. And a man from Hawazin, on a red camel of his, holding a black banner atop a long spear, was ahead of the people, with Hawazin behind him. Whenever he caught up with someone, he would thrust with his spear, and whenever the people outran him, he would raise it for those behind him, and they would follow him. Ibn Ishaq said: 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn Qatada told me, from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabir, from his father Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, who said: While that man from Hawazin, the standard-bearer, was on his camel doing what he was doing, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and a man from the Ansar swooped down upon him, intending to attack him. 'Ali came at him from behind and struck the camel's hocks, so it fell on its haunches, and the Ansari man leapt upon the man and struck him a blow that severed his foot at mid-shin, so he was thrown down from his mount, and the people clashed in battle. By Allah, the returning people did not return from their rout until they found the captives bound at the Messenger of Allah's side, peace and blessings be upon him.
