English Translation
Rawh told us: Sa'id told us, from Qatada, from Anas ibn Malik, that they questioned the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one day until they wore him out with questions. So one day he went out and ascended the pulpit and said: "Ask me nothing today but I will inform you of it." The companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, were alarmed that this might be before some matter that had already come to pass. He said: I began not to turn right or left but I found every man with his head wrapped in his garment, weeping. Then a man stood up - one who used to be teased and attributed to someone other than his father - and said: "O Prophet of Allah, who is my father?" He said: "Your father is Hudhafa." Then Umar stood up - or he said, then Umar spoke up - and said: "We are content with Allah as a Lord, with Islam as a religion, and with Muhammad as a Messenger, seeking refuge in Allah from the evil of trials." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I have never seen a day like today in both good and evil. Paradise and the Fire were portrayed to me until I saw them just beyond this wall." Rawh told us: Hisham ibn Abi Abd Allah told us, from Qatada, from Anas, similarly. He said: Qatada used to mention this hadith when asked about this verse: "Do not ask about things which, if made clear to you, would trouble you."
