حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ شَاوَرَ النَّاسَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ فَتَكَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ تَكَلَّمَ عُمَرُ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ فَقَالَتْ الْأَنْصَارُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِيَّانَا تُرِيدُ فَقَالَ الْمِقْدَادُ بْنُ الْأَسْوَدِ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نُخِيضَهَا الْبَحْرَ لَأَخَضْنَاهَا وَلَوْ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَضْرِبَ أَكْبَادَهَا إِلَى بَرْكِ الْغِمَادِ فَعَلْنَا فَشَأْنَكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ فَنَدَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَصْحَابَهُ فَانْطَلَقَ حَتَّى نَزَلَ بَدْرًا وَجَاءَتْ رَوَايَا قُرَيْشٍ وَفِيهِمْ غُلَامٌ لِبَنِي الْحَجَّاجِ أَسْوَدُ فَأَخَذَهُ أَصْحَابُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ وَأَصْحَابِهِ فَقَالَ أَمَّا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَلَيْسَ لِي بِهِ عِلْمٌ وَلَكِنْ هَذِهِ قُرَيْشٌ وَأَبُو جَهْلٍ وَأُمَيَّةُ بْنُ خَلَفٍ قَدْ جَاءَتْ فَيَضْرِبُونَهُ فَإِذَا ضَرَبُوهُ قَالَ نَعَمْ هَذَا أَبُو سُفْيَانَ فَإِذَا تَرَكُوهُ فَسَأَلُوهُ عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ مَا لِي بِأَبِي سُفْيَانَ مِنْ عِلْمٍ وَلَكِنْ هَذِهِ قُرَيْشٌ قَدْ جَاءَتْ وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي فَانْصَرَفَ فَقَالَ إِنَّكُمْ لَتَضْرِبُونَهُ إِذَا صَدَقَكُمْ وَتَدَعُونَهُ إِذَا كَذَبَكُمْ وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِيَدِهِ فَوَضَعَهَا فَقَالَ هَذَا مَصْرَعُ فُلَانٍ غَدًا وَهَذَا مَصْرَعُ فُلَانٍ غَدًا إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فَالْتَقَوْا فَهَزَمَهُمْ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ فَوَاللَّهِ مَا أَمَاطَ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ عَنْ مَوْضِعِ كَفَّيْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ فَخَرَجَ إِلَيْهِمْ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ وَقَدْ جَيَّفُوا فَقَالَ يَا أَبَا جَهْلٍ يَا عُتْبَةُ يَا شَيْبَةُ يَا أُمَيَّةُ قَدْ وَجَدْتُمْ مَا وَعَدَكُمْ رَبُّكُمْ حَقًّا فَإِنِّي قَدْ وَجَدْتُ مَا وَعَدَنِي رَبِّي حَقًّا فَقَالَ لَهُ عُمَرُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ تَدْعُوهُمْ بَعْدَ ثَلَاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ وَقَدْ جَيَّفُوا فَقَالَ مَا أَنْتُمْ بِأَسْمَعَ لِمَا أَقُولُ مِنْهُمْ غَيْرَ أَنَّهُمْ لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ جَوَابًا فَأَمَرَ بِهِمْ فَجُرُّوا بِأَرْجُلِهِمْ فَأُلْقُوا فِي قَلِيبِ بَدْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ عَنْ ثَابِتٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَيْثُ بَلَغَهُ إِقْبَالُ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ قَالَ فَتَكَلَّمَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ فَأَعْرَضَ عَنْهُ ثُمَّ تَكَلَّمَ عُمَرُ فَأَعْرَضَ فَقَالَ سَعْدُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ إِيَّانَا تُرِيدُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَالَّذِي نَفْسِي بِيَدِهِ لَوْ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نُخِيضَهَا الْبِحَارَ لَأَخَضْنَاهَا وَلَوْ أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَضْرِبَ أَكْبَادَهَا إِلَى بَرْكِ الْغِمَادِ قَالَ فَذَكَرَ عَفَّانُ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ فَمَا أَمَاطَ أَحَدُهُمْ عَنْ مَوْضِعِ يَدِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.
English Translation
Abd al-Samad told us: Hammad told us, from Thabit, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, consulted the people on the day of Badr. Abu Bakr spoke, but he turned away from him. Then Umar spoke, but he turned away from him. So the Ansar said: O Messenger of Allah, is it us you intend? Al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One in whose hand is my soul, if you ordered us to plunge our mounts into the sea, we would plunge them in, and if you ordered us to strike their livers as far as Bark al-Ghimad, we would do it - so it is your affair, O Messenger of Allah. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, called his companions to action, and he set out until he encamped at Badr. Then the water-carriers of Quraysh came, among them a black slave boy of Banu al-Hajjaj. The companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, seized him and asked him about Abu Sufyan and his companions. He said: As for Abu Sufyan, I have no knowledge of him, but this is Quraysh, with Abu Jahl and Umayya ibn Khalaf, who have come. So they began beating him; whenever they beat him he would say, Yes, this is Abu Sufyan. And when they left him alone and asked him about Abu Sufyan, he said: I have no knowledge of Abu Sufyan, but this is Quraysh who have come. And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was praying; when he finished he said: You beat him when he tells you the truth, and you let him be when he lies to you! And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pointed with his hand, placing it down, and said: This is where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, and this is where so-and-so will fall tomorrow, if Allah wills. So they met in battle, and Allah, Mighty and Sublime, defeated them, and by Allah, not one of them moved away from the spot the Prophet's two hands had indicated. He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to them three days later, after they had already begun to rot, and said: O Abu Jahl, O Utba, O Shayba, O Umayya - you have found what your Lord promised you to be true; I too have found what my Lord promised me to be true. Umar said to him: O Messenger of Allah, you call to them after three days when they have rotted? He said: You are no more able to hear what I say than they are, except that they cannot answer. So he ordered them to be dealt with, and they were dragged by their feet and thrown into the pit of Badr. Affan told us: Hammad told us, from Thabit, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when the approach of Abu Sufyan reached him, said - and Abu Bakr spoke, but he turned away from him, then Umar spoke, but he turned away - so Sa'd ibn Ubada said: Is it us you intend, O Messenger of Allah? By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you ordered us to plunge our mounts into the seas, we would plunge them in, and if you ordered us to strike their livers as far as Bark al-Ghimad - Affan then mentioned something similar to Abd al-Samad's account, up to his words: not one of them moved away from the place of the Messenger of Allah's hand.
