English Translation
Abd al-Samad told us, my father told me, Abd al-Aziz told us, who said: Anas ibn Malik told us, who said: The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came to Madinah riding behind Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr was an old man who was recognized, while the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was young and not recognized. A man would meet Abu Bakr and say: O Abu Bakr, who is this man in front of you? He would say: This man guides me on the way. The questioner would suppose he meant merely guiding him on the road, whereas he meant the way of righteousness. Then Abu Bakr turned and saw a horseman who had caught up with them, and said: O Prophet of Allah, a horseman has caught up with us. The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned and said: O Allah, throw him down. So his horse threw him down, then stood up neighing. He then said: O Prophet of Allah, command me as you wish. He said: Stay in your place; do not let anyone catch up with us. So he was, at the start of the day, striving fiercely against the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and by the end of the day he had become a guard for him. Then the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, alighted at the edge of the lava field, then sent for the Ansar, and they came to the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and greeted the two of them, saying: Ride on, safe and secure. So the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abu Bakr rode, and they surrounded them with weapons. It was said in Madinah: The Prophet of Allah has come! And they came out looking at him, saying: The Prophet of Allah has come! He went on riding until he came to the side of the house of Abu Ayyub. He was speaking to its people when Abdullah ibn Salam heard of it, while he was in a palm grove of his family gathering dates for them. He hurried to put down what he was gathering, and came, still carrying it with him, and he heard from the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then returned to his family. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Which of our people's houses is nearest? Abu Ayyub said: I am, O Prophet of Allah — this is my house and this is my door. He said: Then go and prepare a resting place for us. So he went and prepared a resting place for the two of them, then came and said: O Prophet of Allah, I have prepared a resting place for you both, so rise, with Allah's blessing, and rest. So they rested. When the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived, Abdullah ibn Salam came and said: I bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah, and that you have brought the truth, and the Jews indeed know that I am their master and the son of their master, and their most learned, and the son of their most learned. So call them and ask them. So they entered upon him, and the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to them: O assembly of Jews, woe to you, fear Allah! By Him besides whom there is no god, you indeed know that I am truly the Messenger of Allah and that I have brought you the truth — so submit. They said: We do not know that, three times.
