English Translation
Abd al-Samad told us, Hammam told us, Ishaq told us, from Anas, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, sent Haram, his maternal uncle, the brother of Umm Sulaym, with seventy men, and they were killed on the day of Bi'r Ma'unah. The leader of the polytheists that day was Amir ibn al-Tufayl. He had come to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: Choose for me one of three things: the people of the settled land will be yours and the people of the wilderness mine, or I will be your successor after you, or I will raid you with a thousand chestnut horses and a thousand chestnut mares from Ghatafan. Then he was stricken in the house of a woman of Banu so-and-so. He said: A swelling like the swelling of a camel, in the house of a woman of Banu so-and-so. Bring me my horse. So it was brought to him, and he mounted it, and he died while on its back. Then Haram, the brother of Umm Sulaym, set out with two men with him — a man from Banu Umayyah and a lame man — and he said to them: Stay near me until I go to them; if they grant me safety, and if not, you will be nearby, and if they kill me, inform your companions. Haram went to them and said: Will you grant me safety, that I may deliver to you the message of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him? They said: Yes. So he began speaking to them, while they gestured to a man of theirs behind him, who then speared him, running him through with the lance. He said: Allah is greatest, I have triumphed, by the Lord of the Kaaba! Then they killed all of them except the lame man, who was on top of a mountain. Anas said: Then it was revealed to us — and it was among what was recited, then abrogated — Convey to our people that we have met our Lord, and He was pleased with us and made us pleased. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then invoked against them for forty mornings, against Ri'l, Dhakwan, Banu Lihyan, and Usayyah, who had disobeyed Allah and His Messenger.
