English Translation
Bahz told us, and Hashim told us, they said: Sulayman ibn al-Mughirah told us, from Thabit, who said: Anas said, "My uncle" — Hashim said: Anas ibn al-Nadr, after whom I was named — "was not present with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, at the Battle of Badr." He said: This distressed him greatly, and he said, "The first battle in which the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, took part, I was absent from it. If Allah shows me a battle after this with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, Allah will surely see what I do." He said: He was too awed to say more than that. He said: Then he took part with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at the Battle of Uhud. He said: He came upon Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, and Anas said to him, "O Abu 'Amr, where [are you going]?" He said, "Ah, for the fragrance of Paradise — I find it before Uhud!" He said: He fought them until he was killed, and eighty-some wounds were found on his body from sword strikes, spear thrusts, and arrow shots. He said: His sister, my aunt al-Rubayyi' bint al-Nadr, said, "I could not recognize my brother except by his fingertips." And this verse was revealed: "Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits, and they have not changed in the least." He said: They used to believe it was revealed about him and his companions.
