حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَأَبِي بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ فَلَمْ أَسْمَعْ أَحَدًا مِنْهُمْ يَقْرَأُ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرَّحِيمِ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ قَالَ شُعْبَةُ قَالَ قَتَادَةُ سَأَلْتُ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ بِأَيِّ شَيْءٍ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَسْتَفْتِحُ الْقِرَاءَةَ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ لَتَسْأَلُنِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ مَا سَأَلَنِي عَنْهُ أَحَدٌ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah and Hajjaj told us — Hajjaj said: Shu'bah told me — I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas ibn Malik, who said: I prayed with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and Abu Bakr, 'Umar, and 'Uthman, and I did not hear any of them recite 'In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful' aloud. Hajjaj said: Shu'bah said: Qatadah said: I asked Anas ibn Malik, "With what did the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, begin the recitation?" He said, "You are indeed asking me about something no one has asked me about before."
