حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ وَحَجَّاجٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي شُعْبَةُ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ قَالَ جَمَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْأَنْصَارَ فَقَالَ أَفِيكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ غَيْرِكُمْ قَالُوا لَا إِلَّا ابْنَ أُخْتٍ لَنَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ابْنُ أُخْتِ الْقَوْمِ مِنْهُمْ قَالَ حَجَّاجٌ أَوْ مِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَقَالَ إِنَّ قُرَيْشًا حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَمُصِيبَةٍ وَإِنِّي أَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَجْبُرَهُمْ وَأَتَأَلَّفَهُمْ أَمَا تَرْضَوْنَ أَنْ يَرْجِعَ النَّاسُ بِالدُّنْيَا وَتَرْجِعُونَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِلَى بُيُوتِكُمْ لَوْ سَلَكَ النَّاسُ وَادِيًا وَسَلَكَتْ الْأَنْصَارُ شِعْبًا لَسَلَكْتُ شِعْبَ الْأَنْصَارِ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرَ مَعْنَاهُ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ فَأَرَدْتُ أَنْ أَتَأَلَّفَهُمْ وَأَجْبُرَهُمْ.
English Translation
Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah and Hajjaj told us — Hajjaj said: Shu'bah told me — I heard Qatadah narrating from Anas ibn Malik, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered the Ansar and said, "Is there among you anyone who is not one of you?" They said, "No, except a sister's son of ours." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "The sister's son of a people is one of them" — Hajjaj said: or "is counted among themselves" — then he said, "Indeed Quraysh have but recently emerged from the Age of Ignorance and calamity, and I wanted to console them and win over their hearts. Are you not content that the people go away with worldly goods while you go away with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to your homes? If the people were to take a valley and the Ansar were to take a mountain pass, I would take the mountain pass of the Ansar." Muhammad ibn Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Qatadah, from Anas, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he mentioned its meaning, except that he said, "So I wanted to win over their hearts and console them."
