حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَعْدٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي عُقَيْلٌ عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَنَسُ بْنُ مَالِكٍ الْأَنْصَارِيُّ أَنَّهُ كَانَ ابْنَ عَشْرِ سِنِينَ مَقْدِمَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ الْمَدِينَةَ قَالَ وَكَانَ أُمَّهَاتِي يُوطِئْنَنِي عَلَى خِدْمَةِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَكُنْتُ أَعْلَمَ النَّاسِ بِشَأْنِ الْحِجَابِ حِينَ أُنْزِلَ وَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَا أُنْزِلَ ابْتَنَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِزَيْنَبَ بِنْتِ جَحْشٍ أَصْبَحَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِهَا عَرُوسًا فَدَعَا الْقَوْمَ فَأَصَابُوا مِنْ الطَّعَامِ ثُمَّ خَرَجُوا وَبَقِيَ رَهْطٌ مِنْهُمْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَطَالُوا الْمُكْثَ فَقَامَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَخَرَجَ وَخَرَجْتُ مَعَهُ لِكَيْ يَخْرُجُوا فَمَشَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَشَيْنَا مَعَهُ حَتَّى جَاءَ عَتَبَةَ حُجْرَةِ عَائِشَةَ وَظَنَّ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَنَّهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَرَجَعَ وَرَجَعْتُ مَعَهُ فَإِذَا هُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا فَضَرَبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَهُمْ بِسِتْرٍ وَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْحِجَابَ.
English Translation
Hajjaj ibn Muhammad told us, Layth -- meaning Ibn Sa'd -- told us, he said: 'Uqayl told me, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Anas ibn Malik al-Ansari told me, that he was ten years old when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived in Medina. He said: My mothers used to encourage me to be in the service of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so I was the most knowledgeable of people about the matter of the veiling when it was revealed. The first occasion of it was when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, consummated his marriage with Zaynab bint Jahsh; the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, woke up that morning as a newly married man with her, so he invited the people, and they partook of the food, then left; but a group of them remained with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and stayed a long while. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, got up and went out, and I went out with him so that they would leave. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, walked, and we walked with him, until he came to the threshold of Aisha's chamber; the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, thought that they had left, so he went back, and I went back with him; but there they were, still not having left. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, went back again, and I went with him, and then they had indeed left. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, put up a curtain between himself and them, and Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed the verse of the veiling.
