حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَخْبَرَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنْ قَتَادَةَ عَنْ أَنَسٍ أَوْ عَنِ النَّضْرِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَعَدَنِي أَنْ يُدْخِلَ الْجَنَّةَ مِنْ أُمَّتِي أَرْبَعَ مِائَةِ أَلْفٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ زِدْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَهَكَذَا وَجَمَعَ كَفَّهُ قَالَ زِدْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ وَهَكَذَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ حَسْبُكَ يَا أَبَا بَكْرٍ فَقَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ دَعْنِي يَا عُمَرُ مَا عَلَيْكَ أَنْ يُدْخِلَنَا اللَّهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ الْجَنَّةَ كُلَّنَا فَقَالَ عُمَرُ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ إِنْ شَاءَ أَدْخَلَ خَلْقَهُ الْجَنَّةَ بِكَفٍّ وَاحِدٍ فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَدَقَ عُمَرُ.
English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq told us, Ma'mar informed us, from Qatadah, from Anas -- or from al-Nadr ibn Anas, from Anas -- who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Allah, Mighty and Sublime, has promised me that He will admit four hundred thousand of my nation into Paradise." Abu Bakr said, "Give us more, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "And thus," and he cupped his hand together. He said, "Give us more, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "And thus." Umar said, "That is enough for you, O Abu Bakr." Abu Bakr said, "Leave me, O Umar -- what harm is it to you if Allah, Mighty and Sublime, admits all of us into Paradise?" Umar said, "Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Sublime, if He wills, can admit His creation into Paradise with a single handful." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Umar has spoken the truth."
