English Translation
Affan narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to us: Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf narrated to me, he said: I went to Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and said, "Won't you come out with us to the palm groves and talk?" So he went out. I said, "Tell me what you heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, say about the Night of Decree." He said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, secluded himself in the mosque during the first ten days of Ramadan, and we secluded ourselves with him. Then Gabriel came to him and said, 'What you are seeking is ahead of you.' So on the morning of the twentieth of Ramadan, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood up to deliver a sermon and said, 'Whoever secluded himself with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, should return, for I was shown the Night of Decree, and it is in the last ten nights of Ramadan, on an odd night, and I have been made to forget it. And I saw myself as though prostrating in mud and water.'" He said: "And we saw nothing in the sky" — Hammam said, I think he said, a wisp of cloud, naming the cloud by a specific term — "then a cloud came, and the roof of the mosque was made of palm branches, and we were rained upon, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, led us in prayer, and I saw the trace of mud and water on the forehead of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and on the tip of his nose, confirming his vision."
