English Translation
Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Sufyan informed us, from his father, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: Ali, while he was in Yemen, sent a small quantity of gold, still in its ore, to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and he distributed it among al-Aqra' b. Habis al-Hanzali - one of Banu Mujashi' - and Uyaynah b. Badr al-Fazari, and Alqamah b. Ulathah al-Amiri - one of Banu Kilab - and Zayd al-Khayr al-Ta'i - one of Banu Nabhan. He said: The Quraysh and the Ansar became angry and said, "He gives to the chieftains of the people of Najd and leaves us out!" He said, "I am only conciliating them." He said: Then a man approached with sunken eyes, a protruding forehead, a thick beard, prominent cheekbones, and a shaven head, and he said, "O Muhammad, fear Allah!" He said, "Who then would obey Allah if I disobeyed Him? He entrusts me with the people of the earth, yet you do not trust me!" He said: A man among the people asked to kill him - I think it was Khalid b. al-Walid - but the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade him. When the man turned to leave, he said, "From the offspring of this one, a people will emerge who recite the Qur'an, but it will not pass beyond their throats; they will pass out of Islam just as an arrow passes through its target; they will kill the people of Islam and leave the idol-worshippers. If I live to see them, I will surely kill them like the killing of Ad."
