English Translation
Yazid told us, Hisham ibn Abi Abdullah al-Dastawa'i informed us, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Hilal ibn Abi Maymunah, from Ata' ibn Yasar, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, delivered a sermon to us one day and ascended the pulpit, and we sat around him. He said: "Among the things I fear for you after me is what Allah will open up for you of the flowers and adornment of this world." A man said: "O Messenger of Allah, does good bring evil?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, fell silent, and we thought that Gabriel was descending upon him. It was said to him: "What is the matter with you, speaking to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, while he does not speak to you?" Then the state passed from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and he began wiping the sweat from himself, and said: "Where is the questioner?" — as though he commended him — and said: "Good does not bring evil, but indeed some of what the spring produces kills, or causes bloating, except for the grazing animal that eats greenery until, when its flanks are distended, it faces the sun, and defecates and urinates, then goes back to grazing. Wealth is sweet and green, and an excellent companion it is for the Muslim man who gives from it to the poor, the orphan, and the wayfarer" — or words to that effect — "but he who takes it without right is like one who eats but is never satisfied, and it will be a witness against him on the Day of Resurrection."
