English Translation
Muhammad ibn Fudayl told us, Umarah ibn al-Qa'qa' told us, from Ibn Abi Nu'm, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, who said: Ali sent from Yemen to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, a piece of gold in a tanned hide, not yet extracted from its ore. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, divided it among four men: Zayd al-Khayr, al-Aqra' ibn Habis, Uyaynah ibn Hisn, and Alqamah ibn Ulathah - or Amir ibn al-Tufayl, Umarah being uncertain. Some of his Companions, the Ansar and others, were displeased at that, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Will you not trust me, when I am trusted by the One who is in heaven? News comes to me from heaven morning and evening." Then a man came to him, deep-set of eyes, prominent of cheekbones, protruding of forehead, thick of beard, with his lower garment hitched up, and shaven-headed, who said: "Fear Allah, O Messenger of Allah!" He raised his head to him and said: "Woe to you! Am I not the most deserving of the people of the earth to fear Allah?" Then the man turned away, and Khalid said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not strike off his head?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Perhaps he prays." Khalid said: "Many a one who prays says with his tongue what is not in his heart." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "I have not been commanded to search into the hearts of people nor to cut open their bellies." Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, looked at him as he turned his back and said: "Indeed, from the seed of this man there will emerge a people who recite the Qur'an, but it will not pass beyond their throats; they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes out of the game it pierces."
