حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ السَّائِبِ عَنْ رَجُلٍ مِنْ الْأَنْصَارِ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الصَّلَاةُ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا كَفَّارَةٌ وَالْجُمُعَةُ إِلَى الْجُمُعَةِ الَّتِي قَبْلَهَا كَفَّارَةٌ وَالشَّهْرُ إِلَى الشَّهْرِ الَّذِي قَبْلَهُ كَفَّارَةٌ إِلَّا مِنْ ثَلَاثٍ قَالَ فَعَرَفْنَا أَنَّهُ أَمْرٌ حَدَثَ إِلَّا مِنْ الشِّرْكِ بِاللَّهِ وَنَكْثِ الصَّفْقَةِ وَتَرْكِ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ قُلْنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ هَذَا الشِّرْكُ بِاللَّهِ قَدْ عَرَفْنَاهُ فَمَا نَكْثُ الصَّفْقَةِ وَتَرْكُ السُّنَّةِ قَالَ أَمَّا نَكْثُ الصَّفْقَةِ فَأَنْ تُعْطِيَ رَجُلًا بَيْعَتَكَ ثُمَّ تُقَاتِلَهُ بِسَيْفِكِ وَأَمَّا تَرْكُ السُّنَّةِ فَالْخُرُوجُ مِنْ الْجَمَاعَةِ.
English Translation
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The (five daily) prayers are an expiation for what comes between them, the Jumu'ah prayer to the previous Jumu'ah is an expiation, and the month (of Ramadan) to the previous month is an expiation — except for three things.' We understood it was a serious matter — except for associating partners with Allah, breaking a pledge, and abandoning the Sunnah. We said: 'O Messenger of Allah, we know about associating partners with Allah, but what is breaking a pledge and abandoning the Sunnah?' He said: 'Breaking a pledge is giving a man your oath of allegiance and then fighting him with your sword. And abandoning the Sunnah is separating from the community.'
