حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِكَثْرَةِ سُؤَالِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ لَا تَسْأَلُونِي عَنْ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا أَخْبَرْتُكُمْ بِهِ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ حُذَافَةَ مَنْ أَبِي يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ أَبُوكَ حُذَافَةُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ فَرَجَعَ إِلَى أُمِّهِ فَقَالَتْ وَيْحَكَ مَا حَمَلَكَ عَلَى الَّذِي صَنَعْتَ فَقَدْ كُنَّا أَهْلَ جَاهِلِيَّةٍ وَأَهْلَ أَعْمَالٍ قَبِيحَةٍ فَقَالَ لَهَا إِنْ كُنْتُ لَأُحِبُّ أَنْ أَعْلَمَ مَنْ أَبِي مَنْ كَانَ مِنْ النَّاسِ.
English Translation
Yazid told us: Muhammad b. Amr informed us, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Those before you were destroyed only by their excessive questioning and their disputing with their prophets. Do not ask me about anything, for I will inform you of it." Abdullah b. Hudhafah said: "Who is my father, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Your father is Hudhafah b. Qays." He returned to his mother, and she said: "Woe to you! What made you do what you did? We were people of the Age of Ignorance and of shameful deeds." He said to her: "I only wished to know who my father was, whoever he was among the people."
