Hadrat Mu'awiyah ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates: 'I was praying with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) when a man sneezed. I said: "Yarhamukallah (May Allah have mercy on you)." The people stared at me. I said: "Woe to my mother! What is wrong with you that you are looking at me?" They began striking their thighs with their hands — I understood that they were silencing me.' In Hadrat 'Uthman's narration: 'When I saw that they were silencing me, I fell silent.' He said: 'When the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) finished the prayer — may my father and mother be sacrificed for him — he neither struck me, nor scolded me, nor rebuked me. Then he said: "Indeed, in this prayer, nothing of ordinary human speech is permissible. It is only glorification (tasbih), magnification (takbir), and recitation of the Quran." Or as the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated.' I submitted: 'O Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), we are a people who have recently left the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah). Allah has brought us Islam, and among us are men who visit soothsayers.' He said: 'Do not visit them.' I said: 'Among us are men who take omens.' He said: 'That is something they find in their hearts — let it not prevent them (from doing good).' I said: 'Among us are men who draw lines (divination in sand).' He said: 'There was a prophet among the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)s who used to draw lines. Whoever's line coincides with his, that is (acceptable).' I said: 'I have a slave-girl who used to tend sheep near Uhud and al-Jawwaniyyah. One day I noticed that a wolf had taken one of the sheep. I am a human being — I get angry as others get angry — but I slapped her.' The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) considered this a serious matter. I said: 'Shall I not set her free?' He said: 'Bring her to me.' He said: 'I brought her. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) asked: "Where is Allah?" She said: "In the heaven." He said: "Who am I?" She said: "You are the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him)." He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: "Set her free, for she is a believer."'
Urdu Translation
حضرت معاویہ بن حکم سُلمی رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ فرماتے ہیں: میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ نماز پڑھ رہا تھا — ایک شخص نے چھینک ماری تو میں نے کہا: یرحمک اللہ۔ لوگوں نے مجھے گھور کر دیکھا۔ میں نے کہا: ہائے اپنی ماں کا واسطہ! تمہیں کیا ہوا مجھے دیکھ رہے ہو؟ انہوں نے اپنے ہاتھ رانوں پر مارنا شروع کیے — میں سمجھ گیا کہ وہ مجھے چپ کرا رہے ہیں۔ حضرت عثمان کی روایت میں ہے: جب میں نے دیکھا کہ وہ مجھے خاموش کرا رہے ہیں تو میں چپ ہو گیا۔ فرمایا: جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نماز سے فارغ ہوئے — میرے ماں باپ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر فدا — نہ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے مارا، نہ ڈانٹا، نہ بُرا بھلا کہا — پھر ارشاد فرمایا: بے شک اس نماز میں لوگوں کی بات چیت میں سے کچھ جائز نہیں — یہ تو صرف تسبیح، تکبیر اور قرآن کی قراءت ہے۔ یا جیسا کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! ہم نئے نئے اسلام لائے ہیں — جاہلیت کا زمانہ ابھی قریب ہے — اللہ نے ہمیں اسلام عطا فرمایا ہے اور ہم میں سے کچھ لوگ کاہنوں کے پاس جاتے ہیں۔ ارشاد فرمایا: ان کے پاس مت جاؤ۔ میں نے عرض کیا: ہم میں سے کچھ لوگ فال لیتے ہیں۔ ارشاد فرمایا: وہ (وسوسہ ہے) جو ان کے دلوں میں ہوتا ہے — وہ انہیں (نیک کام سے) نہ روکے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: ہم میں سے کچھ لوگ لکیریں کھینچتے ہیں (ریت پر فال نکالتے ہیں)۔ ارشاد فرمایا: ایک نبی تھے جو لکیریں کھینچتے تھے — جس کی لکیر ان کی لکیر سے موافق ہو جائے تو ٹھیک ہے۔ میں نے عرض کیا: میری ایک لونڈی ہے جو اُحد اور جوّانیہ کی طرف بکریاں چراتی تھی — ایک دفعہ میں نے دیکھا کہ بھیڑیا بکری لے گیا — میں بھی آدم کی اولاد میں سے ہوں، غصہ آتا ہے جیسے اوروں کو آتا ہے — لیکن میں نے اسے ایک تھپڑ مار دیا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے اسے بڑی بات سمجھا۔ میں نے عرض کیا: کیا میں اسے آزاد نہ کر دوں؟ ارشاد فرمایا: اسے میرے پاس لاؤ۔ فرمایا: میں اسے لے کر حاضر ہوا — آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اللہ کہاں ہے؟ اس نے کہا: آسمان میں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: میں کون ہوں؟ اس نے کہا: آپ اللہ کے رسول ہیں۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: اسے آزاد کر دو — یہ مؤمنہ ہے۔
