Hadrat Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah ennoble his countenance) narrates: 'When the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stood for prayer, he would say the takbir, then say: "Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fataras-samawati wal-ard, hanifan musliman wa ma ana minal-mushrikin. Inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi Rabbil-'alamin, la sharika lahu wa bidhalika umirtu wa ana awwalul-muslimin. Allahumma Antal-Maliku la ilaha li illa Anta, Anta Rabbi wa ana 'abduka. Zalamtu nafsi wa'taraftu bidhanbi faghfir li dhunubi jami'an innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa Anta. Wahdini li ahsanil-akhlaq la yahdi li ahsaniha illa Anta. Wasrif 'anni sayyi'aha la yasrifu sayyi'aha illa Anta. Labbayka wa sa'dayk, wal-khayru kulluhu fi yadayk, wash-sharru laysa ilayk. Ana bika wa ilayk, tabarakta wa ta'alayt, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk" (I have turned my face to the One who created the heavens and the earth, as a monotheist, a Muslim, and I am not of the polytheists. My prayer, my sacrifice, my life and my death are for Allah, Lord of the worlds, who has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit. O Allah, You are the Sovereign, there is no god for me but You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and confess my sins, so forgive me all my sins — none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character — none guides to the best of it but You. Turn away from me evil character — none turns it away but You. Here I am at Your service. All good is in Your hands and evil is not attributed to You. I exist by You and return to You. Blessed and Exalted are You, I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You).' When he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) bowed, he would say: 'Allahumma laka raka'tu wa bika amantu wa laka aslamtu. Khasha'a laka sam'i wa basari wa mukhkhi wa 'izami wa 'asabi' (O Allah, for You I have bowed, in You I believe, to You I submit. My hearing, my sight, my brain, my bones, and my sinews are humbled before You). When he raised from bowing, he would say: 'Sami'Allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana wa lakal-hamdu mil'as-samawati wal-ard wa mil'a ma baynahuma wa mil'a ma shi'ta min shay'in ba'd' (Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, to You belongs praise filling the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them and whatever You will beyond that). When he prostrated, he would say: 'Allahumma laka sajadtu wa bika amantu wa laka aslamtu. Sajada wajhi lilladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu fa ahsana suratahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu. Tabarakallahu ahsanul-khaliqin' (O Allah, for You I have prostrated, in You I believe, to You I submit. My face has prostrated to the One who created it and shaped it, giving it the best form, and opened its hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the Best of creators). When he gave the salutation ending the prayer, he would say: 'Allahummaghfir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu wa ma asraftu wa ma Anta a'lamu bihi minni. Antal-Muqaddimu wal-Mu'akhkhiru la ilaha illa Ant' (O Allah, forgive me what I have done before and what I have done after, what I have concealed and what I have declared, what I have been excessive in, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and puts back. There is no god but You).'

حضرت علی بن ابی طالب کرّم اللہ تعالیٰ وجہہ الکریم فرماتے ہیں: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم جب فرض نماز کے لیے کھڑے ہوتے تو تکبیر فرماتے پھر یہ دعا پڑھتے: «وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِي فَطَرَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ حَنِيفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا أَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِينَ، إِنَّ صَلَاتِي وَنُسُكِي وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَبِذٰلِكَ أُمِرْتُ وَأَنَا أَوَّلُ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، اللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الْمَلِكُ لَا إِلٰهَ لِي إِلَّا أَنْتَ، أَنْتَ رَبِّي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي وَاعْتَرَفْتُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي ذُنُوبِي جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاهْدِنِي لِأَحْسَنِ الْأَخْلَاقِ لَا يَهْدِي لِأَحْسَنِهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، وَاصْرِفْ عَنِّي سَيِّئَهَا لَا يَصْرِفُ سَيِّئَهَا إِلَّا أَنْتَ، لَبَّيْكَ وَسَعْدَيْكَ وَالْخَيْرُ كُلُّهُ فِي يَدَيْكَ وَالشَّرُّ لَيْسَ إِلَيْكَ، أَنَا بِكَ وَإِلَيْكَ، تَبَارَكْتَ وَتَعَالَيْتَ أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْكَ»۔ (ترجمہ: میں نے اپنا رُخ اس ذات کی طرف کیا جس نے آسمانوں اور زمین کو پیدا فرمایا — یکسو مسلمان ہو کر — اور میں مشرکوں میں سے نہیں۔ بے شک میری نماز، میری قربانی، میرا جینا اور میرا مرنا اللہ رب العالمین کے لیے ہے جس کا کوئی شریک نہیں، اور مجھے اسی کا حکم دیا گیا ہے اور میں سب سے پہلے فرمانبرداری کرنے والا ہوں۔ اے اللہ! تو بادشاہ ہے، تیرے سوا میرا کوئی معبود نہیں، تو میرا رب ہے اور میں تیرا بندہ ہوں۔ میں نے اپنی جان پر ظلم کیا اور اپنے گناہ کا اعتراف کرتا ہوں، پس میرے تمام گناہ بخش دے، بے شک تیرے سوا کوئی گناہ نہیں بخشتا۔ مجھے بہترین اخلاق کی طرف رہنمائی فرما — بہترین اخلاق کی طرف تیرے سوا کوئی نہیں لے جا سکتا۔ مجھ سے بُرے اخلاق دور فرما — بُرے اخلاق تیرے سوا کوئی نہیں ہٹا سکتا۔ میں حاضر ہوں تیری خدمت میں، ہر خیر تیرے ہاتھوں میں ہے اور شر تیری طرف منسوب نہیں ہوتا۔ میں تیری توفیق سے ہوں اور تیری ہی طرف لوٹنے والا ہوں۔ تو بابرکت اور بلند ہے، تجھ سے مغفرت مانگتا ہوں اور تیری طرف توبہ کرتا ہوں۔) اور جب رکوع فرماتے تو فرماتے: «اللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ رَكَعْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ خَشَعَ لَكَ سَمْعِي وَبَصَرِي وَمُخِّي وَعِظَامِي وَعَصَبِي» (اے اللہ! تیرے لیے رکوع کیا، تجھ پر ایمان لایا، تیرے لیے سرِ تسلیم خم کیا، میری سماعت، بصارت، دماغ، ہڈیاں اور پٹّھے تیرے سامنے جھک گئے)۔ اور جب (رکوع سے) اٹھتے تو فرماتے: «سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَه، رَبَّنَا وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ مِلْءَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمِلْءَ مَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَمِلْءَ مَا شِئْتَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ بَعْد» (اللہ نے سن لی اس کی جس نے اس کی حمد کی، اے ہمارے رب! تیرے لیے حمد ہے آسمانوں اور زمین بھر اور ان کے درمیان بھر اور جو تو چاہے اس کے بعد بھی بھر)۔ اور جب سجدہ فرماتے تو فرماتے: «اللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ سَجَدْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَلَكَ أَسْلَمْتُ، سَجَدَ وَجْهِي لِلَّذِي خَلَقَهُ وَصَوَّرَهُ فَأَحْسَنَ صُورَتَهُ وَشَقَّ سَمْعَهُ وَبَصَرَهُ وَتَبَارَكَ اللّٰهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ» (اے اللہ! تیرے لیے سجدہ کیا، تجھ پر ایمان لایا اور تیرے لیے سرِ تسلیم خم کیا، میرے چہرے نے اس ذات کو سجدہ کیا جس نے اسے پیدا کیا اور اسے صورت بخشی اور بہترین صورت بنائی اور اس کی سماعت اور بصارت کو کھولا — پاک ہے اللہ سب سے بہتر بنانے والا)۔ اور جب نماز سے سلام پھیرتے تو فرماتے: «اللّٰهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِي مَا قَدَّمْتُ وَمَا أَخَّرْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَرْتُ وَمَا أَعْلَنْتُ وَمَا أَسْرَفْتُ وَمَا أَنْتَ أَعْلَمُ بِهِ مِنِّي، أَنْتَ الْمُقَدِّمُ وَالْمُؤَخِّرُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ» (اے اللہ! بخش دے مجھے جو پہلے کیا اور جو بعد میں کیا، جو چھپایا اور جو ظاہر کیا، جو حد سے بڑھا اور جو تو مجھ سے بہتر جانتا ہے — تو ہی آگے کرنے والا ہے اور پیچھے کرنے والا، تیرے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں)۔
