حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ، وَوَكِيعٌ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ، قَالَ رَكِبَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَرَسًا بِالْمَدِينَةِ فَصَرَعَهُ عَلَى جِذْمِ نَخْلَةٍ فَانْفَكَّتْ قَدَمُهُ فَأَتَيْنَاهُ نَعُودُهُ فَوَجَدْنَاهُ فِي مَشْرَبَةٍ لِعَائِشَةَ يُسَبِّحُ جَالِسًا قَالَ فَقُمْنَا خَلْفَهُ فَسَكَتَ عَنَّا ثُمَّ أَتَيْنَاهُ مَرَّةً أُخْرَى نَعُودُهُ فَصَلَّى الْمَكْتُوبَةَ جَالِسًا فَقُمْنَا خَلْفَهُ فَأَشَارَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَعَدْنَا . قَالَ فَلَمَّا قَضَى الصَّلاَةَ قَالَ " إِذَا صَلَّى الإِمَامُ جَالِسًا فَصَلُّوا جُلُوسًا وَإِذَا صَلَّى الإِمَامُ قَائِمًا فَصَلُّوا قِيَامًا وَلاَ تَفْعَلُوا كَمَا يَفْعَلُ أَهْلُ فَارِسَ بِعُظَمَائِهَا " .
English Translation
Hadrat Jabir (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrates: 'The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) rode a horse in Madinah and was thrown off at the root of a date-palm, and his blessed foot was dislocated (sprained). We came to visit him and found him offering voluntary prayer sitting in the upper chamber of Umm al-Mu'minin Hadrat Aisha Siddiqah (may Allah be well pleased with her). We stood behind him and he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) remained silent about us (i.e., did not object). Then we came another time to visit him and he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was offering the obligatory prayer sitting. We stood behind him, so he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) gestured to us to sit down. When he finished the prayer, he stated: "When the imam prays sitting, pray sitting; and when the imam prays standing, pray standing. And do not behave like the people of Persia used to behave with their chiefs (i.e., the people would stand while their king sat)."'
Urdu Translation
حضرت جابر (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) فرماتے ہیں: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم مدینے میں ایک گھوڑے پر سوار ہوئے تو کھجور کے ایک تنے سے آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم گر گئے اور آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا قدمِ مبارک اکھڑ گیا (مچک گیا)۔ ہم آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی عیادت کے لیے حاضر ہوئے تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو حضرت اُمّ المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے بالاخانے میں بیٹھ کر تسبیح پڑھتے پایا۔ فرماتے ہیں: ہم آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پیچھے کھڑے ہو گئے تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہمارے بارے میں خاموشی اختیار فرمائی (یعنی منع نہیں کیا)۔ پھر ہم دوسری مرتبہ عیادت کے لیے حاضر ہوئے تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم فرض نماز بیٹھ کر پڑھ رہے تھے، ہم آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پیچھے کھڑے ہو گئے تو آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہمیں اشارہ فرمایا کہ بیٹھ جاؤ۔ جب نماز مکمل ہوئی تو ارشاد فرمایا: جب امام بیٹھ کر نماز پڑھے تو تم بھی بیٹھ کر پڑھو، اور جب امام کھڑے ہو کر نماز پڑھے تو تم بھی کھڑے ہو کر پڑھو، اور اہلِ فارس کی طرح نہ کرو جیسے وہ اپنے بڑوں کے ساتھ کرتے تھے (یعنی لوگ کھڑے رہیں اور بادشاہ بیٹھا رہے)۔
