Arabic (Original)
حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بُدَيْلٍ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّ عُمَرَ، - رضى الله عنه - جَعَلَ عَلَيْهِ أَنْ يَعْتَكِفَ فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ لَيْلَةً أَوْ يَوْمًا عِنْدَ الْكَعْبَةِ فَسَأَلَ النَّبِيَّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَقَالَ " اعْتَكِفْ وَصُمْ " .
English Translation
It is narrated from Hadrat Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) that Hadrat Umar (ibn al-Khattab) (may Allah be well pleased with him) made a vow during the days of Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era) that he would observe i'tikaf for one night or one day at the Ka'bah. He asked the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) about it. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Observe i'tikaf and fast."
Urdu Translation
حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما سے روایت ہے کہ حضرت عمر (بن خطاب) رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے زمانۂ جاہلیت میں اپنے اوپر یہ نذر مانی تھی کہ وہ کعبۃ اللہ کے پاس ایک رات یا ایک دن اعتکاف کریں گے۔ تو انہوں نے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پوچھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: "اعتکاف کرو اور روزہ رکھو۔"
