Abdullah ibn Mas'ud said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) took me with him on the night of the jinn. We went until we reached the upper part of Makkah. He drew a line around me and said: 'Do not leave.' Then he went among the mountains, and I saw men descending upon him from the mountaintops until they came between me and him. I unsheathed my sword and said: 'I will strike until I rescue the Messenger of Allah.' Then I remembered his words: 'Do not leave until I come to you.' So I stayed like that until dawn came. The Prophet (peace be upon him) came while I was standing and said: 'Are you still as you were?' I said: 'If you had stayed a month, I would not have left until you came to me.' Then I told him what I had intended to do. He said: 'If you had left, neither I nor you would have met until the Day of Resurrection.' Then he interlocked his fingers with mine and said: 'I was promised that both jinn and humans would believe in me. As for humans, they have believed in me. As for the jinn, you have seen.' He said: 'I do not think my time is anything but near.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint Abu Bakr as successor?' He turned away from me, and I saw that it did not suit him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint Umar?' He turned away from me, and I saw that it did not suit him. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, will you not appoint Ali?' He said: 'That one - by the One besides whom there is no god - if you pledged allegiance to him and obeyed him, he would enter you all into Paradise.'
