Khalaf ibn Amr al-Ukbari narrated to us, from Sa'id ibn Mansur, from Abu Shaybah Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah, from Abd al-Malik ibn Umayr, from Zirr ibn Hubaysh that Ibn Mas'ud said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): 'Which deeds are best?' He said: 'Prayer at its time.' I said: 'Then which?' He said: 'Dutifulness to parents.' I said: 'Then which?' He said: 'Jihad in the cause of Allah.' And by Allah, had I asked him for more, he would have given me more. I said: 'Which sin is greatest before Allah?' He said: 'That you set up a rival to Allah while He created you.' I said: 'Then which?' He said: 'That you kill your child for fear that he will eat with you.' I said: 'Then which?' He said: 'That you commit adultery with your neighbor's wife.' It was not long before Allah revealed its confirmation: {And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden except by right and do not commit unlawful sexual intercourse. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty} [25:68]. Yazid ibn Mu'awiyah narrated it fully, while Hammad ibn Salamah did not.
