Ḥadīth | Ṭabarānī (الطبراني) tabarani:8844 حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو يَزِيدَ الْقَرَاطِيسِيُّ ثنا أَسَدُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ أَنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ صَعِدَ الْمِنْبَرَ وَهُوَ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَنْعَى عُمَرَ فَخَنَقَتْهُ الْعَبْرَةُ مَرَّةً أَوْ مَرَّتَيْنِ ثُمَّ قَالَ إِنَّ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ كَانَ حِصْنًا حَصِينًا لِلْإِسْلَامِ يَدْخُلُ فِيهِ وَلَا يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُ فَانْهَدَمَ الْحِصْنُ ثُمَّ نَعَاهُ ثُمَّ قَالَ وَاسْتُخْلِفَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ فَلَمْ نَأْلُ عَنْ خَيْرِهَا فَوْقُ
الترجمة الإنجليزية
Ibn Mas'ud ascended the pulpit intending to announce the death of Umar, and grief choked him once or twice. Then he said: 'Umar ibn al-Khattab was an impregnable fortress for Islam - people would enter it and not leave. The fortress has been destroyed.' Then he announced his death and said: 'Uthman ibn Affan has been appointed caliph, and we spared no effort in choosing the best, the most pre-eminent.'
