Sufyan ibn 'Abdullah narrated that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent him as a zakat collector. He would count the young lambs against the people. They said: "You count the young lambs against us but do not take any of them?" When he came to 'Umar, he mentioned this to him. 'Umar said: "Yes, you count the young lamb that the shepherd carries, but do not take it. And do not take the fattened one kept for eating, nor the pregnant one, nor the one about to give birth, nor the stud ram. Take the one-year-old and the two-year-old — that is fair between the young of the flock and its best."
