Khawlah bint Tha'labah, the wife of Aws ibn al-Samit, narrated: He entered upon me one day, agitated, and spoke to me. I talked back to him and he said: "You are to me as the back of my mother" (a pre-Islamic form of divorce called zihar). Then he went out and sat among his people, then returned wanting intimacy. I refused and struggled against him. I said: "No! By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Khawlah, you shall not reach me until Allah makes His judgment between us." So I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) to complain about what I had suffered. He said: "He is your husband and your cousin, so fear Allah." Then Allah revealed {Indeed Allah has heard the statement of her who pleads with you concerning her husband} until the expiation. The Messenger of Allah said: "Tell him to free a slave." She said: "He has no slave." He said: "Then let him fast two consecutive months." She said: "He is an old man and cannot fast." He said: "Then let him feed sixty poor people." She said: "He has nothing to feed them with." He said: "We shall help him with a basket of dates." She said: "And I will help him with another basket." He said: "You have done well. Tell him to give it in charity."
