Al-Ash'ath ibn Qays and Jarir ibn 'Abdullah al-Bajali came to Salman and entered upon him in a hut on the outskirts of al-Mada'in. They greeted him and said: "Are you Salman al-Farisi?" He said: "Yes." They said: "Are you a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?" He said: "I do not know." They were confused and said: "Perhaps he is not the one we seek." He told them: "I am the one you seek. I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and sat with him. However, his true companion is only the one who enters Paradise with him. So what is your need?" They said: "We come from a brother of yours in Syria." He said: "Who is he?" They said: "Abu al-Darda'." He said: "Where is the gift he sent with you?" They said: "He did not send any gift with us." He said: "Fear Allah and fulfill the trust. No one has come from him except that he brought a gift with him." They said: "Do not hold this against us — we have wealth, so demand whatever you wish." He said: "I do not want your wealth, but I want the gift he sent with you." They said: "By Allah, he did not send anything with us, except that he said: 'Among you is a man whom the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), when he was alone with him, would not seek anyone else's company. When you reach him, convey my greetings of peace.'" Salman said: "This is the gift I wanted from you, and what gift is better than the greeting of peace? A blessed, pure greeting from Allah."
