Sahl ibn Sa'd was asked about the pulpit — from which type of wood was it made? He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) sent word to a certain woman, naming her, and said: "Tell your carpenter servant to make me some wooden planks from which I can address the people." So he made these three steps from the tamarisk wood of al-Ghabah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered it placed in its position. Sahl said: I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the first day he sat upon it. He said the takbir, and the people said it behind him. Then he bowed while on the pulpit, then raised his head and descended backward, prostrating at the base of the pulpit. Then he returned and did the same in the second rak'ah as he had done in the first. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) finished, he turned to the people and said: "O people, I only did this so that you may follow me and learn my prayer."
