Sahl ibn Abi Hathmah and Rafi' ibn Khadij narrated that Muhayyisah ibn Mas'ud and 'Abdullah ibn Sahl went to Khaybar and separated in the palm groves. 'Abdullah ibn Sahl was killed. The Jews were accused. His brother 'Abd al-Rahman and his cousins Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah went to the Prophet (peace be upon him). 'Abd al-Rahman spoke, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The elder first." Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The Jews should either pay the blood-money or face war." They wrote to the Jews, who denied it. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to the Ansar: "Will you swear fifty oaths and take the blood-money?" They said: "We cannot swear about something we did not witness." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Then the Jews shall swear fifty oaths." They said: "We do not accept the oaths of disbelievers." So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) paid the blood-money from his own wealth.
