Ibn 'Abbas and al-Miswar ibn Makhramah disagreed at al-Abwa'. Ibn 'Abbas said: "The one in ihram may wash his head," and al-Miswar said: "The one in ihram may not wash his head." So Ibn 'Abbas sent him to Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, and he found him bathing between the two posts of a well while covering himself with a cloth. He said: "I greeted him, and he said: 'Who is this?' I said: 'I am 'Abdullah ibn Hunayn. 'Abdullah ibn 'Abbas sent me to ask you how the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to wash his head while in ihram.' Abu Ayyub placed his hand on the cloth and lowered it, then said to someone pouring water over him: 'Pour.' He poured water over his head, then he moved his head with both hands, bringing them forward and backward, then said: 'This is how I saw him do it.'"
