Narrated al-Harith al-Ash'ari: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, 'Indeed Allah commanded Yahya (John) the son of Zakariyya with five words to act upon them and to command the Children of Israel to act upon them. But he was slow. Isa (Jesus) said to him, "You have been commanded with five words to act upon them and command the Children of Israel to act upon them. Either you command them or I will." Yahya said, "If you precede me with them, I fear I will be punished or the earth will swallow me." So he gathered the Children of Israel in Bayt al-Maqdis until the mosque was full and people sat on the balconies. He admonished them and said, "Allah has commanded me with five words to act upon them and to command you to act upon them. The first is that you associate nothing with Allah, for whoever associates anything with Allah is like a man who bought a slave with his pure wealth, gold or silver, and said, 'This is my house and my work, so perform your work.' But the slave works and pays his work to other than his master. Which of you would like to have a slave like that? Allah created you and provides for you, so do not associate anything with Him. Allah commanded you with prayer: when you stand facing Him, do not turn aside, for Allah directs His Face toward His servant when he prays and does not turn away until the servant turns. He commanded you with fasting: the example of the fasting person is like a man with a pouch of musk among a group, none of whom has musk except him, and all of them wish to smell its fragrance. The breath of the fasting person is better to Allah than the fragrance of musk. He commanded you with charity: its example is like a man taken captive by the enemy, who bound his hands to his neck and brought him to strike his neck. He said, 'Do not kill me, I will ransom myself from you with such-and-such wealth.' They released him, and he kept gathering until he ransomed himself. Likewise, charity ransoms the servant from the punishment of Allah. And He commanded you with abundant remembrance of Allah: its example is like a man pursued by the enemy who fled swiftly until he reached a fortified fortress and secured himself within it. Likewise, the servants cannot protect themselves from Shaytan except through the remembrance of Allah.'
