Ibn Abbas narrated from the Prophet ♂ who said: "When Sulayman (Solomon), the Prophet of Allah, stood in his place of prayer, he saw a tree growing before him. He said to it: 'What is your name?' It said: 'The Carob tree.' He said: 'For what purpose are you?' It said: 'For the destruction of this House.' Sulayman said: 'O Allah, conceal my death from the Jinn until mankind knows that the Jinn do not know the unseen.' So he carved it into a staff and leaned on it. Then the termites ate it, and it fell, and he collapsed. They estimated how long the termites had been eating it and found it to be a year. Thus mankind realized that had the Jinn known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating punishment for a year. Ibn Abbas used to recite it this way. The Jinn were grateful to the termites, and they would bring water to them wherever they were."
