Ibn Abbas narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was digging the trench and his companions had tied stones to their bellies from hunger. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw this, he said: 'Can you lead us to a man who will feed us a meal?' A man said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Then go ahead and lead us to him.' They went to the man, and he was in the trench working on his share of it. His wife sent (a message): Come, for the Messenger of Allah has come to us. The man came running and said: 'By my father and mother!' He had a goat with a kid. He rushed toward it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'Leave the kid for us.' So he slaughtered the kid, and the woman took her flour, kneaded it, and baked it. She prepared a tharid (bread soaked in broth) in a bowl and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and his companions. The Prophet put his finger in it and said: 'In the name of Allah. O Allah, bless it. Eat.' They ate from it until they were satisfied, yet they had only eaten a third of it, and two-thirds remained. He sent those ten companions away, saying: 'Go and send us your replacement.' They left, and ten more came in their place. They ate from it until they were full. Then he stood and supplicated for the lady of the house and blessed her and her family. Then they walked to the trench. He said: 'Take us to Salman.' There was a rock before him that he had been unable to break. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions: 'Let me be the first to strike it.' He said: 'In the name of Allah,' and struck it. A third of it broke off. He said: 'Allahu Akbar! The palaces of Rome, by the Lord of the Kaaba!' Then he struck again and another piece broke off. He said: 'Allahu Akbar! The palaces of Persia, by the Lord of the Kaaba!' At that, the hypocrites said: 'We are digging a trench to protect ourselves, and he promises us the palaces of Persia and Rome!'
