Ibn Abbas narrated regarding the verse: 'Those whose lives the angels take while they are wronging themselves — [the angels] will say: In what condition were you? They will say: We were oppressed in the land. They will say: Was not the earth of Allah spacious enough for you to emigrate therein? For those, their refuge is Hell, and evil it is as a destination.' They were Muslim people in Makkah who went out with some polytheists to fight and were killed among them. So this verse was revealed: 'Except for the oppressed among men, women, and children who cannot devise a plan nor are they directed to a way. For those it is expected that Allah will pardon them.' So Allah excused those who had a valid excuse and destroyed those who had none. Ibn Abbas said: 'I and my mother were among those who had a valid excuse.'
