Ibn Abbas narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'Were it not for the impurities of Jahiliyyah that have touched the (Black) Stone, and the hands of wrongdoers and sinners, it would have been sought for healing from every ailment. And had it remained today as it was on the day Allah created it... Allah changed it to black so that the people of the world would not look at the adornment of Paradise. It will indeed return to it, for it is a ruby from the rubies of Paradise that Allah placed when He sent down Adam at the location of the Ka'bah before the Ka'bah existed. The earth at that time was pure, and no sin had been committed upon it, and it had no inhabitants to defile it. A row of angels was placed at the boundaries of the Haram to guard it from the inhabitants of the earth, who at that time were the jinn, who were not allowed to look at it because it is something from Paradise. The angels would drive them away from it while standing at the edges of the Haram, surrounding it from every side. That is why it was called the Haram, because they would prevent them from approaching it.'
