Ibn Abbas narrated from the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he said: 'Indeed Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created this city on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and fashioned it when He fashioned the sun and the moon. Whatever is opposite to it in the sky is sacred. It is not permissible for anyone before me, and it was only made permissible for me for an hour of the day, then it returned as it was.' He was told: 'This is Khalid ibn al-Walid killing.' He said: 'Go, O so-and-so, to Khalid ibn al-Walid and tell him to stop the killing.' The man went to him and said: 'The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) says: Kill whoever you can.' So he killed seventy people. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) was informed of this, and he sent for Khalid and said: 'Did I not forbid you from killing?' He said: 'So-and-so came to me and ordered me to kill whoever I could.' The Prophet sent for the man and asked: 'Did I not command you?' He said: 'You intended one thing, but Allah intended another, and the command of Allah was above yours. I could only do what happened.' The Prophet of Allah (peace be upon him) remained silent and did not respond to him.'
