Ibn Abbas narrated: I was with Ibn Umar when he recited: {To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Whether you show what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will bring you to account for it.} Ibn Umar wept until Ibn Abbas heard his sobbing from the back of the mosque. Ibn Umar said: 'We will be held accountable for what our souls whisper.' Sa'id ibn Marjanah said: I asked Ibn Abbas about what I witnessed. He said: 'May Allah forgive Abu Abdur-Rahman. The Muslims found this verse difficult, just as he did, and they complained about it to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Thus says your Lord. So say: We hear, obey, and we seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the return." They said it as long as Allah willed, until Allah the Exalted revealed: {The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord} to: {Allah does not burden a soul beyond its capacity.}' [2:285-286]
