Abu al-Aswad al-Du'ali said: "I debated with the Qadariyyah (those who deny predestination) and they cornered me. So I went to 'Imran ibn Husayn al-Khuza'i, a companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), and said: 'O Abu Nujayd, I debated with the Qadariyyah and they cornered me. Do you have a hadith to narrate to me, perhaps Allah may benefit me through it?' He said: 'Perhaps if I narrate to you a hadith, you would block your ears as if you did not hear it.' I said: 'I have come for that very purpose.' He said: 'If Allah were to punish the people of the heavens and the earth, He would punish them without being unjust, and if He were to encompass them in His mercy, His mercy would be more vast than their sins. For it is as Allah the Almighty says: {He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills.} Whoever is punished, it is just, and whoever is shown mercy, it is just. And even if one of you had mountains of gold or silver and spent it in the way of Allah, then did not believe in divine decree — its good and its evil — he would not benefit from that.' Then I went to Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and asked him, and he said the same as 'Imran ibn Husayn said from the Prophet (peace be upon him)."
