Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that Abu Bakr went out, driven by nothing but hunger, and 'Umar went out, driven by nothing but hunger, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out to them, and they informed him that nothing had driven them out except hunger. He said: "Come with us to the house of a man from the Ansar called Abu al-Haytham ibn al-Tayhan." They found he was not home, having gone to fetch water. His wife welcomed the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his two companions and spread something for them to sit on. The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked her: "Where has Abu al-Haytham gone?" She said he went to fetch fresh water. Shortly after, Abu al-Haytham came with a water-skin and hung it up. He wanted to slaughter a sheep for them, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) seemed to dislike that, so he slaughtered a young goat instead. Then he brought clusters of dates from the palm trees, and they ate from the meat, fresh dates, and ripe dates, and drank from the water. One of them — either Abu Bakr or 'Umar — said: "This is from the bounty about which we will be questioned." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The believer will not be reproached for what he attains in this world. Rather, the disbeliever will be reproached."
