Narrated Humayd ibn Nafi', from Zaynab bint Abi Salamah: She informed him (Humayd) of these three hadiths. He says that Zaynab said: The father of Umm al-Mu'minin Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her), Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him), died, so I went to her. Umm al-Mu'minin Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent for a perfume that was yellow khaluq (a kind of compound perfume) or some other perfume, and applied it to a girl (with her own hands), then wiped her hands on her cheeks and said: By Allah, I have no need of perfume, but (this is only for the instruction of ordinary women) I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, while he (peace be upon him) was on the pulpit: "It is not lawful for a person who believes in Allah the Exalted and the Last Day to mourn for any dead person more than three days, except that a woman may mourn for her husband four months and ten days." Zaynab said: Then I went to Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her) when her brother died, and she too sent for perfume and applied it, then said: By Allah, I have no need of perfume, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say, while he (peace be upon him) was on the pulpit: "It is not permissible for a person who believes in Allah the Exalted and the Last Day to mourn for a dead person more than three days, except a woman whose husband dies — she mourns for four months and ten days." Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard my mother Umm al-Mu'minin Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) say: A woman came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah! My daughter's husband has died and her eyes are sore; may I apply kohl to her? He (peace be upon him) said: No. Then the woman asked two or three times, and each time he (peace be upon him) said: No. Then he said: "The waiting period ('iddah) is now only four months and ten days; whereas in the Days of Ignorance (jahiliyyah), a woman would throw dung after a full year." (The narrator of the hadith) Humayd says: I asked Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her): What does it mean, that she threw dung after a whole year? Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: (In the days of jahiliyyah) when a woman's husband died, she would enter a hut (i.e., a small, ugly dwelling), wear the worst of clothes, apply no perfume or anything else, until a year passed. Then an animal — a donkey, sheep, or bird — would be brought to her, with which she broke her waiting period (rubbing the animal against her skin or wiping her hand on it); it was very rare that the animal survived (usually it died — perhaps from the influence of Satan, or the filth accumulated on her body from living in a hut produced a poisonous matter that affected the animal). Then she would come out and a piece of dung would be given to her, which she would throw away, after which she would apply whatever perfume she wished, and so on. حمید بن نافع زینب بنت ابی سلمہ سے روایت کرتے ہیں کہانہوں نے انہیں (حمید کو) ان تین احادیث کی خبر دی۔ کہتے ہیں کہ زینب نے کہا کہ ام المؤمنین ام حبیبہ رضی اللہ عنہا کے باپ ابوسفیان رضی اللہ عنہ فوت ہوئے، تو میں ان کے پاس گئی۔ ام المؤمنین ام حبیبہ رضی اللہ عنہا نے خوشبو منگوائی جو زرد خلوق تھی (ایک قسم کی مرکب خوشبو ہے) یا کوئی اور خوشبو تھی اور ایک لڑکی کو (اپنے ہاتھوں سے) لگائی اور پھر ہاتھ اپنے گالوں پر پھیر لئے اور کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم مجھے خوشبو کی حاجت نہیں تھی مگر (یہ صرف عام عورتوں کی تعلیم کے لئے تھا) میں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے سنا ہے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلممنبر پر فرما رہے تھے کہ اس شخص کو حلال نہیں ہے جو اللہ تعالیٰ اور آخرت کے دن پر یقین رکھتا ہو کہ وہ کسی مردے پر تین دن سے زیادہ سوگ کرے مگر یہ کہ عورت اپنے شوہر کے لئے چار مہینے دس دن تک سوگ کرے۔ زینب نے کہا کہ پھر میں زینب بنت جحش رضی اللہ عنہا کے پاس گئی جب ان کے بھائی فوت ہوئے، تو انہوں نے بھی خوشبو منگوائی اور لگائی، پھر کہا کہ اللہ کی قسم مجھے خوشبو کی حاجت نہیں تھی مگر میں نے رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمسے سنا ہے کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلممنبر پر فرما رہے تھے کہ جو شخص اللہ تعالیٰ پر اور آخرت کے دن پر یقین رکھتا ہو اس کو یہ درست نہیں ہے کہ کسی مردے پر تین دن سے زیادہ سوگ کرے سوا اس عورت کے جس کا خاوند فوت ہو جائے کہ وہ چار مہینے دس دن تک سوگ کرے۔ سیدہ زینب رضی اللہ عنہا نے کہا کہ میں نے اپنی ماں ام المؤمنین ام سلمہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے سنا وہ کہتی تھیں کہ ایک عورت رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس آئی اور کہنے لگی کہ یا رسول اللہ!
