Narrated Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him): A man came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and asked, "How do you fast?" At this the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) became angry (because this question was ill-placed; he should have asked, 'How should I fast?'). Then when Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), he said, "We are pleased with Allah as Lord, with Islam as religion, and with Muhammad (peace be upon him) as Prophet, and we seek refuge with Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) from His anger." Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept repeating these words until the anger of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) subsided. Then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! What of one who fasts always (i.e., continuously)?" He (peace be upon him) said, "He has neither fasted nor broken his fast." Then he asked, "What of one who fasts two days and breaks his fast one day?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Who has the strength for that?" Then he asked, "What of one who fasts one day and breaks his fast one day?" He (peace be upon him) said, "That is the fast of Dawud (peace be upon him)." Then he asked, "What of one who fasts one day and breaks his fast two days?" He (peace be upon him) said, "I wish I had the strength for that." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Three days of fasting every month, and (the fast of) Ramadan followed by Ramadan, this is fasting the whole time (i.e., in reward). And the fast of the day of Arafah, I hope from Allah that it expiates the sins of the year before and the year after; and I hope that the fast of Ashura expiates the sins of the year before."
الترجمة الأردية
سیدنا ابوقتادہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہایک آدمی نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس آیا اور پوچھا کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکیسے روزہ رکھتے ہیں؟ اس پر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمغصہ ہو گئے (اس لئے کہ یہ سوال بے موقع تھا اس کو لازم تھا کہ یوں پوچھتا کہ میں روزہ کیسے رکھوں) پھر جب سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا غصہ دیکھا تو عرض کیا کہ ہم اللہ تعالیٰ کے معبود ہونے، اسلام کے دین ہونے، اور محمدصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے نبی ہونے پر راضی ہوئے اور ہم اللہ اور اس کے رسولصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے غصہ سے پناہ مانگتے ہیں۔ غرض سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ باربار ان کلمات کو کہتے تھے یہاں تک کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکا غصہ تھم گیا۔ پھر سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا کہ اے اللہ کے رسولصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم! جو ہمیشہ روزہ رکھے وہ کیسا ہے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ نہ اس نے روزہ رکھا اور نہ افطار کیا۔ پھر کہا کہ جو دو دن روزہ رکھے اور ایک دن افطار کرے وہ کیسا ہے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ ایسی طاقت کس کو ہے۔ پھر پوچھا کہ جو ایک دن روزہ رکھے او رایک دن افطار کرے، وہ کیسا ہے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ یہ روزہ داؤد علیہ السلام کا ہے۔ پھر پوچھا کہ جو ایک دن روزہ رکھے اور دو دن افطار کرے؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ میں آرزو رکھتا ہوں کہ مجھے اتنی طاقت ہو (یعنی یہ بھی خوب ہے اگر طاقت ہو)۔ پھر رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ ہر ماہ تین روزے اور رمضان کے روزے ایک رمضان کے بعد دوسرے رمضان تک، یہ ہمیشہ کا روزہ ہے (یعنی ثواب میں)۔ اور عرفہ کے دن کا روزہ ایسا ہے کہ میں اللہ تعالیٰ سے امید رکھتا ہوں ایک سال پہلے اور ایک سال بعد کے گناہوں کا کفارہ ہو جائے اور عاشورہ کے روزہ سے امید رکھتا ہوں کہ ایک سال پہلے کا کفارہ ہو جائے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 620]
