Narrated Kurayb: Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her) sent him to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Syria. He said: I went to Syria and accomplished her errand, and I saw the crescent of Ramadan on the night of Friday (that is, the eve of Thursday). Then I came to Medina at the end of the month, and 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) asked me and mentioned the crescent: When did you see it? I said: On the night of Friday. He said: Did you yourself see it? I said: Yes, and the people saw it too and fasted, and so did Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people. Then Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: But we saw it on the night of Saturday, and we shall complete thirty days of fasting or else we shall see the crescent. I said: Do you not consider Mu'awiyah's (may Allah be pleased with him) sighting and his fasting sufficient? He said: No; the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) commanded us thus. And Yahya ibn Yahya was in doubt whether the word in the hadith was "naktafi" or "taktafi."

کریب کہتے ہیں کہسیدہ ام فضل بنت حارث رضی اللہ عنہا نے انہیں سیدنا معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس (ملک) شام بھیجا۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ میں شام گیا اور ان کا کام کر دیا اور میں نے جمعہ (یعنی پنجشنبہ کی شام) کی شب کو رمضان کا چاند دیکھا۔ پھر مہینے کے آخر میں مدینہ آیا۔ اور سیدنا عبداللہ بن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے مجھ سے پوچھا اور چاند کا ذکر کیا کہ تم نے کب دیکھا؟ میں نے کہا کہ جمعہ کی شب کو۔ انہوں نے کہا کہ تم نے خود دیکھا؟ میں نے کہا ہاں اور لوگوں نے بھی دیکھا اور روزہ رکھا سیدنا معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ نے اور لوگوں نے بھی، تو سیدنا ابن عباس رضی اللہ عنہما نے کہا کہ ہم نے تو ہفتہ کی شب کو دیکھا اور ہم پورے تیس روزے رکھیں گے یا چاند دیکھ لیں گے۔ تو میں نے کہا کہ آپ سیدنا معاویہ رضی اللہ عنہ کا (چاند) دیکھنا اور ان کا روزہ رکھنا کافی نہیں جانتے؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ نہیں ہمیں رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ایسا ہی حکم کیا ہے۔ اور یحییٰ بن یحییٰ کو شک ہے کہ حدیث میں”نکتفی“کا لفظ ہے یا”تکتفی“کا۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 578]
