Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) told us — and he (peace be upon him) is the truthful and trustworthy one (al-Sadiq al-Masduq), truthful and confirmed as truthful — he said, "Indeed, the creation of each one of you is gathered in his mother's womb for forty days as a drop, then he remains as a clot for a like period, then as a lump of flesh for a like period. Then Allah, the Exalted, sends to him an angel, who breathes the spirit into him, and he is commanded with four matters: to write his provision (that is, whether he will be needy or wealthy), his lifespan (how long he will live), his deeds (what he will do), and whether he will be fortunate (a dweller of Paradise) or wretched (a dweller of Hell). So I swear by Him besides whom there is no god, that one of you keeps doing the deeds of the people of Paradise until there is only a cubit between him and Paradise (that is, he comes very close), then what is written in the decree overtakes him, so he begins doing the deeds of the people of Hell and enters Hell. And a man keeps doing the deeds of the people of Hell all his life until there is nothing but an arm's length between him and Hell, when what is written in the decree overtakes him, so he begins doing the deeds of the people of Paradise and then enters Paradise."
الترجمة الأردية
سیدنا عبداللہ بن مسعود رضی اللہ عنہما کہتے ہیں کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے ہم سے فرمایا اور آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم(صادق المصدوق) سچے ہیں اور سچے کئے گئے ہیں (فرمایا کہ) بیشک تم میں سے ہر ایک آدمی کا نطفہ اس کی ماں کے پیٹ میں چالیس دن جمع رہتا ہے، پھر چالیس دن جمے ہوئے خون کی شکل میں رہتا ہے، پھر چالیس دن میں گوشت کی بوٹی بن جاتا ہے۔ پھر اللہ تعالیٰ اس کی طرف فرشتے کو بھیجتا ہے، وہ اس میں روح پھونکتا ہے اور اس کو چار باتوں کا حکم ہوتا ہے۔ ایک تو اس کی روزی لکھنا (یعنی محتاج ہو گا یا مالدار)، دوسرے اس کی عمر لکھنا (کہ کتنا جئے زندہ رہے گا)، اور تیسرے اس کا عمل لکھنا (کہ کیا کیا کرے گا) اور یہ لکھنا کہ نیک بخت (جنتی) ہو گا یا بدبخت (جہنمی) ہو گا۔ پس میں قسم کھاتا ہوں اس کی جس کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں ہے کہ بیشک تم لوگوں میں سے کوئی اہل جنت کے کام کرتا رہتا ہے، یہاں تک کہ اس میں اور بہشت میں بالشت بھر کا فاصلہ رہ جاتا ہے (یعنی بہت قریب ہو جاتا ہے) پھر تقدیر کا لکھا اس پر غالب ہو جاتا ہے، پس وہ دوزخیوں کے کام کرنے لگتا ہے اور دوزخ میں چلا جاتا ہے۔ اور کوئی آدمی عمر بھر دوزخیوں کے کام کیا کرتا ہے، یہاں تک کہ دوزخ میں اور اس میں سوائے ایک ہاتھ بھر کے کچھ فرق نہیں رہتا کہ تقدیر کا لکھا اس پر غالب ہوتا ہے، پس وہ بہشتیوں کے کام کرنے لگتا ہے اور پھر بہشت میں چلا جاتا ہے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1847]
