Narrated Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Do you know what backbiting is?" The people said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Backbiting is that you mention your brother in a way that (if he were present) he would dislike." The people said, "O Messenger of Allah! What if that fault is actually present in our brother?" He (peace be upon him) said, "Then that is precisely backbiting; and if it is not (present), then it is slander and calumny."
الترجمة الأردية
سیدنا ابوہریرہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہرسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا: کیا تم جانتے ہو کہ غیبت کیا ہے؟ لوگوں نے کہا کہ اللہ اور اس کا رسول خوب جانتے ہیں۔ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ غیبت یہ ہے کہ تو اپنے بھائی کا ذکر اس طرح پر کرے کہ (اگر وہ سامنے ہو تو) اس کو ناگوار گزرے۔ لوگوں نے کہا کہ یا رسول اللہ! اگر ہمارے بھائی میں وہ عیب موجود ہو تو؟ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے فرمایا کہ جب ہی تو یہ غیبت ہو گی نہیں تو بہتان اور افتراء ہے۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1806]
