Narrated Ibn Abi Mulaykah: I heard Aisha the Truthful, Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her); she was asked, "If the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had appointed a successor, whom would he have appointed?" (From this it is known that he, peace be upon him, did not appoint anyone to the caliphate by explicit text; rather the caliphate of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, came about by the consensus of the Companions. The claim of the Shia that he, peace be upon him, appointed Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, to the caliphate by explicit text is false and baseless, and Ali himself, may Allah be pleased with him, refuted them.) She said, "He would have appointed Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then she was asked, "After him, whom would he have appointed?" She said, "He would have appointed Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then she was asked, "After him, whom would he have appointed?" She said, "Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah." Then she fell silent. ابن ابی ملیکہ کہتے ہیں کہمیں نے ام المؤمنین عائشہ صدیقہ رضی اللہ عنہا سے سنا، ان سے پوچھا گیا کہ اگر رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمخلیفہ کرتے تو کس کو کرتے؟ (اس سے معلوم ہوا کہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے کسی کو خلافت پر نص نہیں کیا بلکہ سیدنا ابوبکر صدیق رضی اللہ عنہ کی خلافت صحابہ کے اجماع سے ہوئی اور شیعہ جو دعویٰ کرتے ہیں کہ سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ کی خلافت پر آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے نص کیا تھا، باطل اور بے اصل ہے اور خود سیدنا علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے ان کی تکذیب کی) انہوں نے کہا کہ سیدنا ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ کو (خلیفہ) بناتے۔ پھر پوچھا گیا کہ ان کے بعد کس کو (خلیفہ) بناتے؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ سیدنا عمر رضی اللہ عنہ کو (خلیفہ) بناتے۔ پھر پوچھا گیا کہ ان کے بعد کس کو (خلیفہ) بناتے؟ انہوں نے کہا کہ سیدنا ابوعبیدہ بن الجراح کو۔ پھر خاموش ہو رہیں۔[مختصر صحيح مسلم/حدیث: 1626]
