Narrated Abdullah bin Zayd bin Asim al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion: The people said to him: "Perform ablution for us as the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) did." So he called for a vessel (of water), tilted it, and first poured water over both his hands (from this it is learned that it is recommended, at the start of ablution, to wash both hands including the fingers before dipping the hands into the water) and washed them three times. Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out, and rinsed his mouth and put water into his nose from a single handful. Then he did the same three times. Then he put his hand in and took it out and washed his face three times (in the narration of Bukhari it is stated that he took water with both hands joined together and washed his face three times). Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out and washed both his hands up to the elbows twice each. Then he put his hand into the vessel and took it out and wiped his head — first bringing both hands from the front to the back, then bringing them from the back to the front (that is, back to the forehead). Then he washed both feet including the ankles. After that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to perform ablution in this manner.
