Abu Khaythamah Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to me, Waki' narrated from Kahmas, from 'Abdullah ibn Buraydah, from Yahya ibn Ya'mur. And 'Ubaydullah ibn Mu'adh al-'Anbari narrated to us — and this is his narration — his father narrated to us, Kahmas narrated from Ibn Buraydah, from Yahya ibn Ya'mur, who said: The first person to speak about divine decree (denying it) in Basra was Ma'bad al-Juhani. I (Yahya) and Humayd ibn Hadrat 'Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari set out for Hajj or 'Umrah and said to each other: If only we could meet one of the Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), we would ask him about what these people say regarding divine decree. By divine grace, we came upon Hadrat 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with them both) entering the mosque. My companion and I surrounded him, one of us on his right and the other on his left. I thought my companion would entrust the conversation to me, so I said: O Abu Hadrat 'Abd al-Rahman! There have appeared among us people who recite the Qur'an and pursue knowledge — and he described their condition — and they claim that there is no divine decree and that events are not predestined. Hadrat Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with them both) said: When you meet those people, tell them I am free of them and they are free of me. By Him by Whom 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar swears, if any one of them had gold equal to Mount Uhud and spent it all, Allah would not accept it from him until he believes in divine decree. Then he said: My father Hadrat 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) told me: One day we were in the company of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) when there appeared before us a man with exceedingly white garments and exceedingly black hair. No signs of travel were visible upon him and none of us recognized him. He sat before the Noble Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), placing his knees against his knees and placing his palms on his blessed thighs, and submitted: O Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), tell me about Islam. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Islam is that you testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad is the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), establish prayer, pay zakat, fast in Ramadan, and perform pilgrimage to the House if you are able to find a way.' He said: You have spoken the truth. Hadrat 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: We were amazed that he asked and then confirmed the answer himself. He submitted: Tell me about faith. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'That you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and that you believe in divine decree — both its good and its evil.' He said: You have spoken the truth. He submitted: Tell me about ihsan (excellence). He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'That you worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then indeed He sees you.' He submitted: Tell me about the Hour. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'The one being asked knows no more than the one asking.' He submitted: Then tell me of its signs. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'That the slave-girl shall give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefooted, unclothed, destitute shepherds vying with one another in constructing tall buildings.' Hadrat 'Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: Then he departed. I remained for a while, then he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to me: 'O 'Umar, do you know who the questioner was?' I submitted: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'That was Jibril (upon him be peace). He came to teach you your religion.'

مجھ سے ابو خیثمہ زہیر بن حرب نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے وکیع نے کہمس سے، انہوں نے عبداللہ بن بریدہ سے، انہوں نے یحییٰ بن یعمر سے روایت کی۔ نیز ہم سے عبیداللہ بن حضرت معاذ عنبری نے — اور یہ انہی کی حدیث ہے — بیان کیا، کہا ہمارے والد نے بیان کیا، کہا ہم سے کہمس نے ابن بریدہ سے، انہوں نے یحییٰ بن یعمر سے روایت کی، فرمایا: سب سے پہلا شخص جس نے بصرہ میں تقدیر (سے انکار) کی بات کی، معبد جہنی تھا۔ میں (یحییٰ) اور حمید بن عبدالرحمن حمیری حج یا عمرے کے ارادے سے نکلے، ہم نے (آپس میں) کہا: کاش! رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے صحابہ کرام میں سے کسی کے ساتھ ہماری ملاقات ہو جائے تو ہم ان سے تقدیر کے بارے میں ان لوگوں کی باتوں کے متعلق دریافت کر لیں۔ توفیقِ الٰہی سے ہمیں حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما مسجد میں داخل ہوتے ملے۔ میں اور میرے ساتھی نے ان کو گھیر لیا، ایک ان کی دائیں طرف تھا اور دوسرا بائیں طرف۔ مجھے اندازہ تھا کہ میرا ساتھی گفتگو کا معاملہ میرے سپرد کرے گا، چنانچہ میں نے عرض کی: اے ابو عبدالرحمن! ہماری طرف کچھ ایسے لوگ ظاہر ہوئے ہیں جو قرآن مجید پڑھتے ہیں اور علم حاصل کرتے ہیں — اور ان کے حالات بیان کیے — ان کا خیال ہے کہ تقدیر کچھ نہیں، (ہر) کام نئے سرے سے ہو رہا ہے۔ حضرت ابن عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما نے فرمایا: جب تمہاری ان لوگوں سے ملاقات ہو تو انہیں بتا دینا کہ میں ان سے بری ہوں اور وہ مجھ سے بری ہیں۔ اس ذات کی قسم جس کے نام کے ساتھ حضرت عبداللہ بن عمر حلف اٹھاتا ہے! اگر ان میں سے کسی کے پاس احد پہاڑ کے برابر سونا ہو اور وہ اسے خرچ بھی کر دے تو اللہ تعالیٰ اس کی طرف سے اسے قبول نہیں فرمائے گا جب تک وہ تقدیر پر ایمان نہ لے آئے۔ پھر فرمایا: مجھے میرے والد حضرت عمر بن خطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے بتایا: ایک دن ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی بارگاہ میں حاضر تھے کہ اچانک ایک شخص ہمارے سامنے نمایاں ہوا، اس کے کپڑے انتہائی سفید اور بال انتہائی سیاہ تھے، نہ اس پر سفر کا کوئی اثر دکھائی دیتا تھا اور نہ ہم میں سے کوئی اسے پہچانتا تھا، یہاں تک کہ وہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آ کر بیٹھ گیا اور اپنے گھٹنے آپ کے گھٹنوں سے ملا دیے اور اپنے ہاتھ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی رانوں پر رکھ دیے اور عرض کیا: اے محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم)! مجھے اسلام کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: ''اسلام یہ ہے کہ تم اس بات کی گواہی دو کہ اللہ تعالیٰ کے سوا کوئی معبود نہیں اور محمد (صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم) اس کے رسول ہیں، نماز قائم کرو، زکوٰۃ ادا کرو، رمضان کے روزے رکھو اور اگر بیت اللہ تک پہنچنے کی استطاعت ہو تو اس کا حج کرو۔'' اس نے کہا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا۔ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: ہمیں اس پر تعجب ہوا کہ خود پوچھتا ہے اور خود ہی تصدیق کرتا ہے۔ اس نے عرض کیا: مجھے ایمان کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: ''یہ کہ تم اللہ تعالیٰ، اس کے فرشتوں، اس کی کتابوں، اس کے رسولوں اور یومِ آخرت پر ایمان رکھو اور اچھی و بری تقدیر پر بھی ایمان لاؤ۔'' اس نے عرض کیا: آپ نے سچ فرمایا۔ اس نے عرض کیا: مجھے احسان کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: ''یہ کہ تم اللہ تعالیٰ کی عبادت اس طرح کرو گویا تم اسے دیکھ رہے ہو، اور اگر تم اسے نہیں دیکھ رہے تو وہ تمہیں دیکھ رہا ہے۔'' اس نے عرض کیا: مجھے قیامت کے بارے میں بتائیے۔ ارشاد فرمایا: ''جس سے پوچھا جا رہا ہے وہ پوچھنے والے سے زیادہ نہیں جانتا۔'' اس نے عرض کیا: تو مجھے اس کی نشانیاں بتا دیجیے۔ ارشاد فرمایا: ''(نشانیاں یہ ہیں کہ) لونڈی اپنی مالکہ کو جنم دے اور یہ کہ تم ننگے پاؤں، ننگے بدن، محتاج، بکریاں چرانے والوں کو دیکھو کہ وہ اونچی اونچی عمارتیں بنانے میں ایک دوسرے سے مقابلہ کر رہے ہیں۔'' حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے فرمایا: پھر وہ چلا گیا، میں کچھ دیر اسی حال میں رہا، پھر آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھ سے ارشاد فرمایا: ''اے عمر! تمہیں معلوم ہے سوال کرنے والا کون تھا؟'' میں نے عرض کیا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ ارشاد فرمایا: ''وہ جبرائیل (علیہ السلام) تھے، تمہارے پاس آئے تھے تاکہ تمہیں تمہارا دین سکھائیں۔''
