Ibn Shihab narrated that Umar bin Abdul Aziz was sitting on the pulpit and delayed the prayer somewhat. Urwah bin al-Zubayr said: 'Did you not know that Jibril informed Muhammad ﷺ of the prayer time?' Umar said to him: 'Know what you are saying, O Urwah.' Urwah said: I heard Bashir bin Abi Mas'ud say: I heard Abu Mas'ud al-Ansari say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'Jibril came down and informed me of the prayer time, so I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him' - and he counted with his fingers five prayers. 'And I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray Dhuhr when the sun passed its zenith, and sometimes he delayed it when the heat was intense. I saw him pray Asr while the sun was high and white before yellowness entered it, so a man would finish the prayer and come to Dhu al-Hulayfah before sunset. He would pray Maghrib when the sun set, and he would pray Isha when the horizon darkened, and sometimes he delayed it until the people gathered. He prayed Fajr in darkness, then he prayed once more and did it in the light, then his prayer after that was in darkness until he died ﷺ, and he did not return to praying in the light.'
