Abu al-Walid narrated: I was in the gathering of Abu al-'Abbas ibn Shurayh when a shaykh stood up to praise him. I heard him say: Abu al-Tahir al-Khawlani narrated to us, 'Abdullah ibn Wahb narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi Ayyub informed me, from Sharahil ibn Yazid, from Abu 'Alqamah, from Hadrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be well pleased with him) that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "Indeed Allah shall send, at the head of every hundred years, someone who shall renew its religion for it." So rejoice, O Qadi, for Allah sent at the head of the first century 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz, and sent at the head of two hundred Muhammad ibn Idris al-Shafi'i, and you are at the head of three hundred. He then recited verses: "Two have passed, and blessed were they — 'Umar the Caliph, then the heir of leadership — al-Shafi'i of Abtah, Muhammad, the inheritance of prophethood and the cousin of Muhammad — Rejoice O Abu al-'Abbas, for you are the third after them — blessings upon the grave of Ahmad." The Qadi Abu al-'Abbas wept loudly and said: "This shaykh has announced my obituary." Then a group of my companions told me they attended the gathering of the Imam Abu al-Tayyib Sahl ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman and this story was mentioned. Abu 'Amr al-Bistami the jurist then composed: "And the fourth renowned one is Sahl, Muhammad — become an imam to every monotheist — the Muslims resort to him altogether in knowledge..."

ابو الولید نے بیان کیا: میں ابو العباس بن شریح کی مجلس میں تھا کہ ایک شیخ کھڑے ہو کر ان کی تعریف کرنے لگے۔ میں نے سنا وہ کہہ رہے تھے: ابو الطاہر خولانی نے ہمیں بیان کیا، عبد اللہ بن وہب نے ہمیں بیان کیا، سعید بن ابی ایوب نے مجھے بتایا، شراحیل بن یزید سے، ابو علقمہ سے، حضرت ابو ہریرہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: «بے شک اللہ تعالیٰ ہر سو سال کے سر پر ایسا شخص بھیجے گا جو اس کے لیے اس کے دین کی تجدید کرے گا۔» پس خوشخبری ہو اے قاضی! اللہ نے پہلی صدی کے سر پر عمر بن عبد العزیز کو بھیجا، دوسری صدی کے سر پر محمد بن ادریس شافعی کو بھیجا، اور آپ تیسری صدی کے سر پر ہیں۔ پھر اشعار پڑھے: «دو گزر گئے اور ان میں برکت تھی — عمر خلیفہ پھر سیادت کے وارث — شافعی ابطحی محمد، نبوت کی میراث اور محمد کے چچازاد — خوش ہو جاؤ اے ابو العباس! تم ان کے بعد تیسرے ہو — احمد کی تربت کو سلام۔» قاضی ابو العباس رحمہ اللہ تعالیٰ رونے لگے اور فرمایا: «اس شیخ نے مجھے میری موت کی خبر سنا دی۔»
