Ali ibn Hamshad al-Adl narrated to us, Ali ibn Abd al-Aziz narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Minhal narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salama narrated to us, Abu Imran al-Jawni narrated from Alqama ibn Abdullah al-Muzani from Hadrat Ma'qil ibn Yasar (may Allah be well pleased with him) that Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) consulted al-Hurmuzan regarding Isfahan, Fars, and Azerbaijan. He said: 'O Commander of the Faithful, Isfahan is the head while Fars and Azerbaijan are the two wings. If you cut off one of the wings, the head remains with the other wing, but if you cut off the head, both wings fall. So begin with Isfahan.' Then Hadrat Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be well pleased with him) entered the mosque and found al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin praying, so he waited until he finished his prayer and said to him: 'I am appointing you.' He replied: 'As a tax collector, no; but as a warrior, yes.' He said: 'Then you are a warrior.' So he dispatched him and sent word to the people of Kufa to reinforce and join him, among whom were Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba, al-Zubayr ibn al-Awwam, al-Ash'ath ibn Qays, Amr ibn Ma'dikarib, and Abdullah ibn Amr. Al-Nu'man came to them with a river between them. He sent al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba as an envoy to them, and their king was Dhu al-Hajibyan. He consulted his companions and said: 'What do you think - should I sit for them in a posture of war or in the splendor of kingship?' So he sat in royal splendor on his throne, placed the crown on his head, with two rows around him wearing silk garments, earrings, and bracelets. Al-Mughira ibn Shu'ba came, holding his upper arms, with a spear and shield in hand, and the people around him in two rows on his carpet. He began piercing it with his spear, tearing it, so they would take it as a bad omen. Dhu al-Hajibyan said to him: 'O company of Arabs, you have been struck by severe hunger and hardship, and you have come out. If you wish, we shall provide for you and you return to your lands.' Al-Mughira spoke, praising Allah and extolling Him, and said: 'We were, O company of Arabs, eating carrion and dead animals, and people would trample us while we could not trample them. Then Allah sent from among us a Messenger from our nobility, the most moderate and most truthful of us in speech. He promised us that these lands would be conquered for us, and we have found all that he promised us to be true. Indeed, I see here garments and splendor, and I do not see those with me leaving until they take it.' Al-Mughira said: 'My soul said to me: If only you gathered your strength and leapt and sat with him on the throne.' When he found a moment of inattention, they rebuked him and began urging him. I said: 'Even if I was foolish, this is not how envoys are treated, and we do not do this to your envoys when they come to us.' He said: 'If you wish, you may cross to us, or if you wish, we shall cross to you.' I said: 'Rather, we shall cross to you.' So we crossed to them and formed ranks against them. They chained themselves - every seven in a chain and five in a chain - so they would not flee. They showered us with arrows until they caused us many casualties. Al-Mughira said to al-Nu'man: 'The people have caused us many casualties, so charge!' He said: 'You are a man of many merits and you witnessed battles with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), but I myself witnessed the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) - when he did not fight at the beginning of the day, he would delay the fighting until the sun declined, the winds blew, and victory descended.' Al-Nu'man said: 'O people, I shall wave (the banner) three times. As for the first wave, let each man attend to his needs. As for the second, let each man inspect his weapons and sword. As for the third, I shall charge, so charge with me. If anyone is killed, let no one turn back for anyone. And if I am killed, do not turn back for me. I shall make a supplication to Allah, and I urge every one of you to say Amin to it.' He said: 'O Allah, grant al-Nu'man martyrdom today, give victory to the Muslims, and grant them conquest.' The people said Amin. He waved his banner three times, then charged and was the first to fall. I remembered his instructions and did not turn back for him, but I marked his place. Whenever we killed one of them, his companions were occupied dragging him away. Dhu al-Hajibyan fell from his grey mule and his belly was split open. Allah granted victory to the Muslims. I came to al-Nu'man while he still had a breath of life. I brought him water and began pouring it on his face, washing the dust from it. He said: 'Who is this?' I said: 'Ma'qil ibn Yasar.' He said: 'What happened to the people?' I said: 'Allah granted them victory.' He said: 'All praise be to Allah! Write of that to Umar.' Then his soul departed. The people gathered around al-Ash'ath ibn Qays. He said: We came to his umm walad (mother of his child) and asked: 'Did he leave any instructions with you?' She said: 'No, except a small box containing a document.' I read it and found in it: 'If so-and-so is killed, then so-and-so (takes command), and if so-and-so is killed, then so-and-so.' Hammad said: Ali ibn Zayd narrated to me, Abu Uthman al-Nahdi narrated to us that he came to Hadrat Umar (may Allah be well pleased with him), who asked: 'What happened to al-Nu'man ibn Muqarrin?' He said: 'He was killed.' He said: 'Truly we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.' Then he asked: 'What happened to so-and-so?' I said: 'He was killed, O Commander of the Faithful, and others whom we do not know.' He said: 'I said: We do not know them, but Allah knows them.'

علی بن حمشاذ عدل نے ہمیں بیان کیا، علی بن عبد العزیز نے ہمیں بیان کیا، حجاج بن منہال نے ہمیں بیان کیا، حماد بن سلمہ نے ہمیں بیان کیا، ابو عمران جونی نے علقمہ بن عبد اللہ مزنی سے، انہوں نے حضرت معقل بن یسار رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت کیا کہ حضرت عمر بن الخطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے ہرمزان سے اصبہان، فارس اور آذربائیجان کے بارے میں مشورہ کیا۔ اس نے کہا: یا امیر المومنین! اصبہان سر ہے اور فارس و آذربائیجان دو بازو ہیں۔ جب آپ ایک بازو کاٹیں گے تو سر دوسرے بازو کے ساتھ رہے گا، اور اگر آپ سر کاٹیں تو دونوں بازو گر جائیں گے، لہٰذا اصبہان سے شروع کریں۔ تو حضرت عمر بن الخطاب رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ مسجد میں داخل ہوئے تو نعمان بن مقرن کو نماز پڑھتے پایا، پس ان کی نماز ختم ہونے تک انتظار کیا اور فرمایا: میں تمہیں عامل مقرر کرنا چاہتا ہوں۔ انہوں نے کہا: محصول وصول کرنے والا نہیں، لیکن غازی ہاں۔ فرمایا: تم غازی ہو۔ پس انہیں روانہ کیا اور اہل کوفہ کو بھیجا کہ ان کی مدد کریں اور ان سے جا ملیں، ان میں حذیفہ بن الیمان، مغیرہ بن شعبہ، زبیر بن العوام، اشعث بن قیس، عمرو بن معدی کرب اور عبد اللہ بن عمرو تھے۔ نعمان ان کے پاس آئے اور ان کے درمیان ایک نہر تھی۔ انہوں نے مغیرہ بن شعبہ کو بطور سفیر ان کے پاس بھیجا اور ان کا بادشاہ ذو الحاجبین تھا۔ اس نے اپنے ساتھیوں سے مشورہ کیا اور کہا: تمہاری کیا رائے ہے، میں ان کے سامنے جنگ کی ہیئت میں بیٹھوں یا شاہی شان و شوکت میں؟ تو وہ اپنے تخت پر شاہی شان سے بیٹھا، تاج سر پر رکھا اور اس کے اردگرد دو صفیں تھیں جن پر ریشمی کپڑے، بالیاں اور کنگن تھے۔ مغیرہ بن شعبہ آئے، اپنے بازوؤں سے پکڑے ہوئے، ہاتھ میں نیزہ اور ڈھال تھی اور لوگ اس کے اردگرد اس کے فرش پر دو صفوں میں تھے۔ وہ اپنے نیزے سے اسے چبھونے لگے تاکہ وہ بدشگونی لیں۔ ذو الحاجبین نے کہا: اے عربوں کی جماعت! تمہیں شدید بھوک اور مشقت نے آ لیا ہے اس لیے تم نکلے ہو۔ اگر چاہو تو ہم تمہیں رسد دے دیں اور تم اپنے ملک واپس جاؤ۔ مغیرہ نے بات کی، اللہ کی حمد و ثنا بیان کی اور فرمایا: ہم عرب مردار اور مُردہ جانور کھاتے تھے اور لوگ ہمیں روندتے تھے جبکہ ہم انہیں نہ روند سکتے تھے۔ پھر اللہ نے ہم میں سے ایک رسول بھیجا جو ہمارے شرفاء میں سے، ہم میں سب سے معتدل اور سب سے سچی بات کرنے والے تھے۔ انہوں نے ہم سے وعدہ فرمایا تھا کہ یہ سرزمین ہمارے لیے فتح ہوگی اور ہم نے ان کا ہر وعدہ سچا پایا۔ اور میں یہاں لباس اور ٹھاٹ دیکھتا ہوں اور میرے ساتھیوں کو نہیں دیکھتا کہ وہ اسے لیے بغیر جائیں۔ مغیرہ نے فرمایا: میرے دل نے مجھ سے کہا کہ کاش تو اپنی طاقت سمیٹ کر ایک چھلانگ لگاتا اور اس کے ساتھ تخت پر بیٹھ جاتا۔ جب مجھے غفلت کا موقع ملا تو انہوں نے مجھے ڈانٹا اور اسے اکسانے لگے۔ میں نے کہا: بھلا بتاؤ اگر میں نے حماقت کی تو یہ سفیروں کے ساتھ ایسا سلوک نہیں کیا جاتا اور ہم تمہارے سفیروں کے ساتھ ایسا نہیں کرتے جب وہ ہمارے پاس آتے ہیں۔ اس نے کہا: اگر چاہو تم ہماری طرف آ جاؤ اور اگر چاہو ہم تمہاری طرف آ جائیں۔ میں نے کہا: بلکہ ہم تمہاری طرف آتے ہیں۔ تو ہم نے نہر عبور کی اور ان کے مقابل صف بندی کی۔ انہوں نے خود کو زنجیروں سے جکڑ لیا - ہر سات ایک زنجیر میں اور پانچ ایک زنجیر میں - تاکہ بھاگ نہ سکیں۔ پھر انہوں نے ہم پر تیر برسائے یہاں تک کہ ہمارے بہت نقصان کیا۔ مغیرہ نے نعمان سے کہا: لوگوں نے ہمارا بہت نقصان کیا ہے، حملہ کریں۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: تم صاحب مناقب ہو اور تم نے رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ غزوات میں شرکت کی ہے، لیکن میں نے خود رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو دیکھا ہے کہ جب آپ دن کے شروع میں جنگ نہ کرتے تو قتال کو سورج ڈھلنے، ہوائیں چلنے اور نصرت اترنے تک مؤخر فرماتے۔ نعمان نے فرمایا: اے لوگو! میں تین بار جھنڈا ہلاؤں گا۔ پہلی بار ہر شخص اپنی ضرورت پوری کرے۔ دوسری بار ہر شخص اپنے ہتھیار اور تلوار دیکھ لے۔ تیسری بار میں حملہ کروں گا تو تم بھی حملہ کرو۔ اگر کوئی شہید ہو تو کوئی کسی کی طرف نہ مڑے اور اگر میں شہید ہو جاؤں تو میری طرف نہ مڑنا۔ اور میں اللہ سے ایک دعا کرتا ہوں اور تم سب پر لازم ہے کہ اس پر آمین کہو۔ پھر فرمایا: اے اللہ! آج نعمان کو شہادت عطا فرما، مسلمانوں کو فتح نصیب فرما اور ان پر دروازے کھول دے۔ لوگوں نے آمین کہا۔ انہوں نے تین بار اپنا جھنڈا ہلایا پھر حملہ کیا تو سب سے پہلے شہید ہوئے۔ مجھے ان کی وصیت یاد آئی تو میں ان کی طرف نہ مڑا مگر ان کی جگہ نشان لگا دی۔ جب بھی ہم ان میں سے کسی کو قتل کرتے تو اس کے ساتھی اسے کھینچنے میں لگ جاتے۔ ذو الحاجبین اپنی سفید خچر سے گرا اور اس کا پیٹ پھٹ گیا اور اللہ نے مسلمانوں کو فتح دی۔ میں نعمان کے پاس آیا اور ان میں ابھی سانس باقی تھی۔ میں ان کے لیے پانی لایا اور ان کے چہرے پر ڈالنے لگا تاکہ خاک دھو سکوں۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: کون ہے؟ میں نے کہا: معقل بن یسار۔ فرمایا: لوگوں کا کیا ہوا؟ میں نے کہا: اللہ نے انہیں فتح عطا فرمائی۔ فرمایا: الحمد للہ! یہ بات عمر کو لکھو۔ پھر ان کی روح پرواز کر گئی۔ لوگ اشعث بن قیس کے پاس جمع ہوئے۔ فرمایا: ہم ان کی ام ولد کے پاس آئے اور پوچھا: کیا انہوں نے تمہیں کوئی عہد کیا تھا؟ اس نے کہا: نہیں، سوائے ایک صندوقچہ کے جس میں ایک تحریر ہے۔ میں نے اسے پڑھا تو اس میں تھا: اگر فلاں شہید ہو تو فلاں (امیر ہو) اور اگر فلاں شہید ہو تو فلاں۔ حماد نے فرمایا: علی بن زید نے مجھے بیان کیا، ابو عثمان نہدی نے ہمیں بیان کیا کہ وہ حضرت عمر رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ کے پاس آئے تو انہوں نے پوچھا: نعمان بن مقرن کا کیا ہوا؟ کہا: شہید ہوگئے۔ فرمایا: انا للہ وانا الیہ راجعون۔ پھر فرمایا: فلاں کا کیا ہوا؟ میں نے کہا: شہید ہوگئے یا امیر المومنین، اور دوسرے بھی جنہیں ہم نہیں جانتے۔ فرمایا: میں نے کہا: ہم انہیں نہیں جانتے لیکن اللہ انہیں جانتا ہے۔
