ʿUthman ؓ used to stand by a grave and weep until his beard became wet. It was said to him: You remember Paradise and Hell and you do not weep, but you weep for this? He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ʿThe grave is the first stage of the hereafter. If one is saved from it (i.e., its torments), then what comes after it is easier than it. But if one is not saved from it {i.e. its torments), then what comes after it is worse.ʿ And the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: By Allah, I have never seen any frightening scene but the grave is more frightening than it.ʿ (Using translation from Aḥmad 454) وَقَدْ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْفَقِيهُ أَنْبَأَ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُوسَى ثنا هِشَامُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الصَّنْعَانِيُّ ثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ بَحِيرٍ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ هَانِئًا مَوْلَى عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَفَّانَ يَقُولُ كَانَ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عَفَّانَ إِذَا وَقَفَ عَلَى قَبْرٍ بَكَى حَتَّى يَبُلَّ لِحْيَتَهُ فَيُقَالُ لَهُ قَدْ تَذْكُرُ الْ��َنَّةَ وَالنَّارَ فَلَا تَبْكِي وَتَبْكِي مِنْ هَذَا فَيَقُولُ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ «إِنَّ الْقَبْرَ أَوَّلُ مَنَازِلِ الْآخِرَةِ فَإِنْ نَجَا مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَيْسَرُ مِنْهُ وَإِنْ لَمْ يَنْجُ مِنْهُ فَمَا بَعْدَهُ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُ» وَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ «مَا رَأَيْتُ مَنْظَرًا إِلَّا وَالْقَبْرُ أَفْظَعُ مِنْهُ»
الترجمة الإنجليزية
Hadrat Uthman (may Allah be well pleased with him) used to stand by a grave and weep until his beard became wet. It was submitted to him: "You remember Paradise and Hell and you do not weep, but you weep for this?" He said: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If one is saved from it, then what comes after it is easier than it. But if one is not saved from it, then what comes after it is worse." And the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: "By Allah, I have never seen any sight more frightening than the grave."
الترجمة الأردية
حضرت عثمان رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ ایک قبر کے پاس کھڑے ہو کر اتنا روتے کہ آپ کی داڑھی تر ہو جاتی۔ آپ سے عرض کیا گیا: آپ جنت اور جہنم کا ذکر سنتے ہیں تو نہیں روتے لیکن اس پر روتے ہیں؟ انہوں نے فرمایا: رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ارشاد فرمایا: «قبر آخرت کی پہلی منزل ہے۔ اگر کوئی اس سے بچ گیا تو اس کے بعد والی منزلیں آسان ہیں اور اگر اس سے نہ بچا تو اس کے بعد والی اور سخت ہیں۔» اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «اللہ کی قسم! مَیں نے قبر سے زیادہ خوفناک کوئی منظر نہیں دیکھا۔»
